Celebrate The Small Things + Which Writerly Type Are You?

It's Friday again, which means it's celebration time. This is a weekly hop hosted by Viklit over at Scribblings Of An Aspiring Author.

This week I'm celebrating the following:

~ Writing: I'm still plodding along…

~ Reading: Over the past ten days, I completed two stories. One was a speculative sci-fi/mystery/suspense/thriller all rolled into one. The other story was a romantic suspense with touches of suspense/thriller.

~ I sorted out some old stuff and dropped a bag of clothing at the Salvation Army offices in our area.

~ I'm enjoying the last few days of my 3 week break and trying to get rid of the nasty sinus cold which started two days ago… aaargh!

HERE ARE 5 TYPES OF WRITERS. WHICH CATEGORY DO YOU FALL INTO?

1.THE HEMINGWAY

The tortured author, tapping away on a typewriter in a mountain retreat. Wild hair, scant meals, sleep-deprived, continuously slightly drunk and chain-smoking.

2.THE MEDIA JUNKIE

Listening to fast music on i-Pod or laptop, oblivious of the surroundings which might be a cafe', train, family TV room or workplace. Laptop has ten windows open for 'research' including e-mail, twitter, facebook and Wikipedia.

3.THE MIDNIGHT OIL

When the house is quiet and everyone else's day is over, this one is just starting work. Typing through the tiredness and pain barrier. Pulling together the inspiration of observations and events from the preceding daylight hours. Pausing to reflect upon the words written, listening to the drip of the bathroom tap, the hum of a transformer in some electrical apparatus somewhere in the house.

4.THE PEACEMAKER

A scented candle, Buddha Bar on the music system. Pilates exercises performed with control and precision, establishing the inner core. Elsewhere in the house family rampage at a safe distance, out of earshot. Writing flows from the spirit. Characters talk aloud and their dialogue falls upon the keyboard.

5.THE EARLY BIRD

Rising at the hour of milkmen from yesteryear, moving from bedroom to study and pushing the door firmly shut. Chapters formulated subconsciously during sleep are thrown onto the page to be edited during some lull in the day. As the family stirs, heading off to the bathroom and using time under the shower to think a way out of the present predicament of the main character.

The above extract is taken from The New Author by Ruby Barnes.

So which one are you? I fall mostly into category no.3

So what have you been up to? Please share in the comment section… and enjoy your weekend!

Two books and some stuff donated – that's good.

And be real -which category do you think I fall into? The media junkie of course!!

  2. Elizabeth on July 13, 2013 at 1:35 am

I am definitely an early bird. My best ideas come to me when I am half-asleep.

  3. Al Diaz on July 13, 2013 at 2:27 am

I could be the Hemingway but since I don't smoke and I really don't drink that much, I'll say number 2. 😀

You did a lot this week! Good for you. .:)

  4. Donna B. McNicol on July 13, 2013 at 3:23 am

Definitely much more the media junkie…but only use the music at home, my best work is done at McDonalds. of all places. LOL!

  5. Krystal on July 13, 2013 at 5:47 am

I'm definitely a 3! I could stay up all night if only I didn't have to get up in the morning.

  6. Shelly on July 13, 2013 at 10:29 am

I prefer early morning to write, but that depends on my crazy, flexible work hours. The boss bounces us around like basketball week to week. I hate that. I like working 2 to 9 shifts. They're more doable. Working today. Off tomorrow.

    hugs and chocolate,

    Shelly

I'm more of the midnight oil kind of person myself. Those are some grea accomplishments. I have an award on my blog for you.

  8. Jemi Fraser on July 13, 2013 at 2:44 pm

I tend to write in the evenings when family life has quieted down so I guess I'm a #3 too! 🙂

  9. J. A. Bennett on July 13, 2013 at 3:16 pm

I don't really fit any of those types to a T, but I'm proably closest to the media junike. I do like my pop music and my 15 tabs 🙂

  10. Nancy LaRonda Johnson on July 13, 2013 at 4:20 pm

Wonderful for you on your two new stories. Isn't great to be in the honeymoon stage with new stories, where they are just perfect and show of your genious? 🙂 May you keep getting engaged in that way! And may that cold go away so you can enjoy the rest of your break.

And I'm more of a Media Junkie.

  11. Randi Lee on July 13, 2013 at 4:32 pm

Congrats on the celebratory actions 😀 And I'd probably label myself a Hemmingway…I really need to get out more….and maybe get a haircut LOL

  12. Julie on July 13, 2013 at 5:10 pm

I'm also impressed that you read two books so quickly! It's nice that you donated to the Salvation Army. I'm closest to the Midnight Oil version. Hope you're feeling better Michelle!

  13. Viklit on July 13, 2013 at 5:40 pm

I enjoyed the five types of writers v. much. I'm a midnight oil!

  14. L. Diane Wolfe on July 13, 2013 at 5:49 pm

I'm mostly #2, but I'm more of a fragmented writer – a little bit here and there. And I'm not that oblivious when writing. I'm easily distracted. For that matter, I am my own distraction.

  15. shell flower on July 13, 2013 at 5:58 pm

Sorry to hear you have a cold. I caught one this week, too, but it got me out of a day and a half of work, so that helps. As far as writing types, I'm a mash-up of Hemmingway, Junkie and Buddha, I guess. Lately, just more of a reader than a writer, but making progress toward my yearly reading goal is good. Take care!

  16. PK Hrezo on July 13, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Hee hee. Those are great! An actually, I've fallen into all of them at some time or another. Depends on the time of year and the story, as my writing habits have to go with the flow and adapt to season. 🙂

  17. Leslie Rose on July 14, 2013 at 2:33 am

I'm so a 3, but not above morphing into a 2. Uh, oh. I'm in the mountains right now. Someone hide the wine.

  18. Jo Murphey on July 14, 2013 at 9:22 am

I'm a combination of midnight oil and early bird. It depends on when the muse strikes.

  19. Tyrean on July 14, 2013 at 4:24 pm

#5 although I also resemble the one with the website pages open ignoring the world around me in dance studio and acting studio lobbies . . . I write when my kids are asleep or busy, or even sometimes asking me for truckloads of chocolate (and I have a tendency to answering “sure” when I’m writing).

  20. Sherry Ellis on July 14, 2013 at 9:59 pm

I'm a combination of 3 and 4.  I like to pull away into solitary confinement and let the story flow, but it usually doesn't happen until everyone is in bed.

  21. Nas on July 14, 2013 at 10:23 pm

I'm an early morning person. Hugs on the cold, hope you get well soon.

  22. Lara Lacombe on July 15, 2013 at 12:56 am

I'm mostly a Midnight Oil writer, with a bit of Peacemaker thrown in for good measure.

    Hope you're feeling better! 🙂

  23. Miss Tutti on July 15, 2013 at 2:13 pm

Wow… I'm not sure which category I fit into. There should be an option for "writes whenever work and life hasn't drained all of your energy". If I had to choose one, in a perfect world, I'd like to be #1… Sounds very Johnny Depp lol

  24. Crystal Collier on July 15, 2013 at 5:19 pm

LOL! I fall into all BUT #4–if you take into account there's an avelanche of chaos brewing around me at all times, no silence, no distance. I think when you've been writing long enough, you figure out how to fit it around any circumstance/way of life.

  25. Mary on July 15, 2013 at 9:38 pm

Glad your story is coming along. Hmm, I guess I'm mostly the morning writer, but my inspiration doesn't come from dreams. And I work in the afternoons and evenings, too.

  26. Medeia Sharif on July 16, 2013 at 1:39 pm

I'm between 3 and 5. I write the most late at night or early in the morning.

I almost said 2 since I listen to music, but I really don't write in public that much. Maybe if I'm travelling.

I hope the cold went away.

  27. J.L. Campbell on July 16, 2013 at 3:29 pm

    Hi, Michelle,

    Hope you feel much better.

As to the type of writer. If a combo-type writer. I'll burn the midnight oil, but I like having the television on (even though I don't watch at the same time) and I also like to check in on the various social media platforms too.

  28. C. Lee McKenzie on July 16, 2013 at 6:31 pm

Earlybird here! Light a candle and I want to sleep.

    Take care. Be well.

  29. Tammy theriault on July 16, 2013 at 8:13 pm

I am midnight oil. Sounds sexy too!! Lol

  30. Gina on July 16, 2013 at 8:52 pm

I am definitely the media junkie and the midnight oil. Not a good combination.

  31. Carol Kilgore on July 17, 2013 at 2:28 pm

    Love this! I'm a cross between 2 and 4. Mostly 2. Sadly.

  32. Damyanti on July 18, 2013 at 12:35 am

I need to start celebrating the small things. Take care of you and hope you're much better now, Michelle.

  33. Meradeth on July 18, 2013 at 1:37 am

Love these categories. Not sure which one I fit into though–maybe a little media junkie (I love my music), and a little midnight oil 🙂

  34. Morgan Shamy on July 18, 2013 at 3:56 am

I’m number 3 too!!!! Definitely. This was way fun. Loved this post!

  35. Hilary on July 18, 2013 at 5:53 am

Hi Michelle .. hope that sinus has cleared up – they're always debilitating in a minor way.

I don't think I slot into any of those .. but then I'm not writing a book … I mull my thoughts over re blog posts and set aside some quiet time to tap one out – or the draft, then get in a muddle – or it doesn't go the way I'd like it to .. wait, leave til another quiet space appears .. and so I go on – a post gets up eventually … and that is the right word this week!  Eventually!

I'd like number 5 – to write themselves off the page – then life would be perfect!

    Cheers Hilary

  36. Pat Hatt on July 18, 2013 at 12:55 pm

Depends on the day I'd say, sometimes early sometimes late, but I get things done at any rate.

  37. Cherie Reich on July 18, 2013 at 2:17 pm

I hope you're over the sinus infection!

    I think I'm a cross between #2 and #5. Although if I didn't have the day job, then I'd be more a #3.

  38. tara tyler on July 18, 2013 at 4:40 pm

    love this list!

but i have to add "the quickie," stealing moments from the hectic day to peck out ir jot down scenes…

  39. Beverly Fox on July 19, 2013 at 3:47 pm

These are so fun!  I'm a combination of 2 (especially during NaNo) and 5 (though i'm not up at milkman hours, more first thing in the morning time).

  40. Rachna Chhabria on July 19, 2013 at 4:27 pm

Hi Michelle, two books and stuff donated, that is very good. I would say I am the early bird type (though not at milkman hours but still early enough).

  41. LD Masterson on July 19, 2013 at 4:44 pm

I'm sort of a number 3. Not by choice, it just seems to work out that way.

  42. Jocelyn Rish on July 19, 2013 at 9:29 pm

Hope you get rid of the cold ASAP! I'm definitely a midnight oil girl – apparently I'm some kind of weird vampire type writer who is physically unable to write when it's light outside.

  43. The Golden Eagle on July 19, 2013 at 10:16 pm

I'm a mix of The Peacemaker and the Early Bird. Probably more of an Early Bird in habits, though I don't always write first thing.

  44. celeste on July 21, 2013 at 1:07 am

Keep plodding, Michelle! You're on your way! 🙂

  45. Madeleine on July 21, 2013 at 6:47 pm

LOL! Love this. I thik I'll go for media junkie especially the 'research' bit ;O)

  46. Nana Prah on July 22, 2013 at 8:30 pm

By now your sinus cold should be all cleared up. It turns out I'm not on the list. Interesting.

  47. Deanie Humphrys-Dunne on July 27, 2013 at 2:16 pm

Good job doing all those things this week,Michelle! We're all impressed. I'm not sure where I fit in on your list cause I write at all different times of the day, or the night. Wishing everyone a great weekend. Feel better, MIchelle and thanks for stopping by to comment on my blog.
