Five Sentence Fiction #22 – MIDNIGHT

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week the hostess will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

                    

   

It provided a constant source of amusement: the early morning pavement of thronging crowds, a tightly packed frenzy of eager and starry-eyed graduates, in a race against time to Who-knows-where-dot-com, each one eventually slotting into his rightful position, a succession of cogs in the ever-spinning wheel of cyberspace, eager to make a fortune and leave a lasting impression…

He had long ago abandoned that rat race mentality and marched to the irregular beat of a distant drummer only he could hear and understand.    
 

He stared into the inky night, a smirk played on his lips and he raised his glass to the full moon which hung suspended, just outside the window of his penthouse apartment, as the peaceful and unsuspecting city nestled hundreds of feet below.

As planned, it was time to activate phase one of the new operation, aptly encoded as Midnight Beat.

He turned to his computer, reached out his hand and pressed the button…
