First Loves Blogfest

Today is the First Loves Blogfest! Your first movie, first music (song/band,) first book, and first person. Four loves, one blogfest!

FIRST BOOK

It’s a toss up between the book that left a long-lasting impression on me as a teenager and the book that really ignited my love of thriller/mystery stories.

Anne Of Green Gables has to be the one that did it for me as a teen. I also went on to read most of the books in the series.

Sidney Sheldon’s suspense filled novels often featured determined women who persevered in a tough world run by hostile men. Rage Of Angels is the story that took me on a rollercoaster ride on the edge of my seat. The “dead canary with a broken neck” scenario is one that will stay with me for a lifetime.

FIRST SONG/BAND

This one is very, very difficult… can't really say… maybe a three-way tie…

Earth, Wind & Fire – Fantasy

The Carpenters – Close To You.

Shakatak.

FIRST MOVIE

Although I’m not much of a movie-lover, when we were growing up, there were quite a few movies that made an impression on me

A three-way tie…

A Star Is Born starring the legendary Barbara Streisand.

Saturday Night Fever.

Grease.

FIRST CRUSH

As a teenager, I belonged to a youth group. There was a guy who was popular with the girls and most of the young girls had a crush on him. At an annual party/dance, arrangements were made for him to be my partner (can’t remember the details). Suffice it to say, that never happened…  deep down I knew it was wishful thinking and in a strange way, a part of me felt a sense of relief! I mean, what on earth would a shy, insecure, gawkish girl say to a “sophisticated” somebody.

Fast forward… I happened to see this guy about a year ago… and am wondering what the fuss was all about! There’s nothing to rave about – he’s actually a bland character!

                                                     *          *          *          *          *

So there you have it! Though I have to add that these "first loves" are applicable at this moment, and are subject to change, according to change in perception that accompanies the ageing process…

Thank you to Alex J. Cavanaugh for hosting this awesome blogfest!

    musicals! awesome!
and such a sweet crush story, some were meant to be worshipped fom afar =)

    • michelle on May 14, 2012 at 8:34 pm

You're 100% right about some that are meant to be worshipped from afar! I'm thinking now… thank goodness the "arrangement" didn't work out!

  2. Julie on May 14, 2012 at 7:43 pm

I also loved the Sidney Sheldon books!  Did you know that he also created I Dream of Jeannie and Hart to Hart on TV?  I almost chose "Close To You" as my song too, and I still want to dance when Earth Wind and Fire plays on the radio. A Star is Born is also one of my favorites, and I remember buying the album, and the songbook, so I could sing along!  Isn't it amazing when we look back on our old crushes, and wonder what we ever saw in them?  Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane!    Julie

    • michelle on May 14, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Yes, I know about his involvement in the TV world! What a career and an amazing journey he had!  A Star Is Born has some AMAZING songs! And Barbara Streisand is———— there are no words to describe her! *sighs*  You're right… dunno what I saw in that dude… thanks Julie 🙂

I loved that part about meeting the bland guy again. Wonder how I will react if I saw any of my crushes now. Your choices are awesome… I liked Grease, Anne of Green Gables and I loved Sidney's  scorned woman novel The Best Laid Plans..

    • michelle on May 14, 2012 at 8:43 pm

I don't think that dude was aware of my feelings… well, I certainly hope not! Sidney Sheldon has a collection of great novels. I think I must read them again… maybe pick some up from the second-hand bookstore!

  4. Alex J. Cavanaugh on May 14, 2012 at 8:03 pm

No one else has said The Carpenters yet, which surprises me.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!

    • michelle on May 14, 2012 at 8:45 pm

Very surprising that nobody mentioned the unmistakeably smooth and liquid voice of Karen Carpenter… what an untimely demise… such a shame 🙁  Thanks for being such a gracious host, Alex!

  5. Siv Maria on May 14, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Some really great picks here! Loved the Carpenters and thought it was so tragic what happened to Karen. Also the Star is Born, was a fantastic movie both the original and the remake with Streisand.

    • michelle on May 15, 2012 at 7:51 am

Barbara Streisand is one of two artists whose music can move me to tears… what a voice!

Good picks. Your movie choices are very musical. Will you be putting your dancing shoes on now?

Yes, the only guaranteed thing… next month or next year, I might have different ideas about my "first loves"…

This was fun to read. I love "never befores" any who, but reading about other people's firsts is fun!

    • michelle on May 15, 2012 at 7:57 am

      Glad you enjoyed it!

  9. MJ on May 14, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Grease was a great movie! Funny how we think someone is all that but later find out…. not so much! Thanks for stopping by my blog!

… it's all about life being viewed through those youthful rose-tinted glasses… it's a different story when we grow up and Prince Charming is actually the frog…  ha 🙂

I'm glad to see someone else say Anne of Green Gables was their favorite book!

    • michelle on May 15, 2012 at 8:02 am

      The Anne series is evergreen!

So glad to read about yet another Anne Of Green Gables first love…  as a teen, she really captured my imagination… that was many, many, many years ago…

  12. Barbara on May 15, 2012 at 12:01 pm

To answer your question (on my blog)
I lived there for 8 years, (8-16 years old) I stayed in Germiston (Gauteng) and went to the local public primary school and high school!
*I didn't know MC Hammer went broke… was it poor management? Well, I guess, I'll just google it.

Thank you for visiting me 🙂

      Nice to meet you!  🙂

3 musicals – good choices! Any book that Sidney Sheldon writes would be good, but I haven't read this one, will have to try and chase it up!

  14. michelle on May 15, 2012 at 1:50 pm

I love my musicals…  and Sidney Sheldon has definitely secured a spot amongst the greatest suspense/thriller writers of our time…

  15. Susan Kane on May 15, 2012 at 5:41 pm

You really set me to remembering and thinking.  Makes me want to look all your first loves up and see what inspired you.

  16. michelle on May 15, 2012 at 7:01 pm

This blogfest dredged up some memories for me… really going way back…

  17. Jocelyn Rish on May 15, 2012 at 11:17 pm

I loved Anne of Green Gables and Grease too.  I can't tell you how disappointed I was to start high school and discover there was no singing and dancing at lunch. 🙂

    • michelle on May 16, 2012 at 12:43 pm

That's so unfair… to deprive school children of singing/dancing lessons! 🙁 Art is an integral part of a child's growth & development.

  18. Andrea Teagan (@andrea_writing) on May 16, 2012 at 1:37 am

Rage Of Angels sounds really good. I loved Anne of Green Gables. I think its fun that you bumped into your old crush and didn't see what all the fuss was about. hehehe.

  19. michelle on May 16, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Actually, all Sheldon's books are winners!! Anne of Green Gables – a classic! 🙂 Thanks for visiting my place.

I had a diffilcult time with the music love.  I actually wrote up one song and then decided to change it, but it could have been either of those or several others.  Let's say it should have been music in general.

I agree! I also battled with the music aspect of First Loves. There are a number of other songs/bands that I could have used, though I tried to stick to the ones that made a strong impression on me. Even then, it's still highly debatable…

  22. Jeremy Bates on May 20, 2012 at 3:31 am

"Close to You' is my parents' song. It always brings back good memories of my childhood. Thanks for sharing

  23. michelle on May 20, 2012 at 9:31 am

The Carpenters wrote some of the best music around. Thanks for popping in, Jeremy.

  24. Anna Smith on May 20, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Great picks.  I used to love Grease, not so much now though 🙂

  25. michelle on May 21, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Grease is evergreen! What happened to change that? 🙂

  26. Robyn Campbell on May 21, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Earth Wind and Fire were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO SUPER FANTASTIC! I loved their music. I loved the story about your first love. Ha! That's usually how it goes, isn't it? It's kinda like the picture with the two horses, one on each side of the fence. Each horse is eating the grass on the opposite side of them. *wink* Waving.

  27. michelle on May 22, 2012 at 6:56 am

You can listen to Earth Wind & Fire today, and the music is still as fresh as ever! I love their brass section, such awesome arrangements! *waves back*
