J is for Just Do It…

Welcome to your daily dose of inspiration:
In Darkness Be Light.

Since social media and news in recent times has been filled with so much hate and negativity, these simple reminders aim at promoting positivity and lightening up your day.

Just Do It: Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work. William Arthur Ward.

Would you like to be a part of spreading positivity? Check out the We Are The World Blogfest, which aims at promoting positive news. Here’s the shortened version:

  • Keep your post to below 500 words, as much as possible.
  • All we ask is you link to a human news story on your blog on the last Friday of each month, one that shows love, humanity, and brotherhood. Something like this news, about a man who only fosters terminally ill children.
  • Join us on the last Friday of each month in sharing news.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve all bought into the idea that to be motivated and effective we need to feel like we want to take action. The truth is you don’t need to feel like doing it. So if you are sitting there, putting something off because you don’t feel like it, remember that you don’t actually need to feel like it. Just do it!

Well said, Michelle. These days I’m learning that when I sit down at my laptop, it’s time to work. No excuses.

Great sentiment. I especially like the part about “do more than care – help.” It’s all too easy to feel sympathy for someone, but another thing to actually try to make the situation better.

That’s a great point. A lot of the time I don’t feel like writing but I will usually get into it once I get going.

Hi Michelle – what excellent words by Mr Arthur Ward … fantastic way of putting things out there … I’ll remember these and even may use them somewhere else. Ease someone else’s travails … do more than … always – brilliant … cheers Hilary

Our priest once had a sermon that ended with something like, “Wherever you are, be there till you leave”. I adopted this for my kids–do it till it’s over.

    Good post.

I especially liked that bit about ‘don’t have to feel like doing it’ to do it. Basically control your behaviour/action and let your thoughts be wherever they are. Discipline, in one word. So much of life and getting things moving depends on it.

You have me smiling with this one, Michelle. So often I find myself saying, “I don’t feel like doing that now, I’ll do it later.” Often, that is okay because I am not a total procrastinator or a slacker. But sometimes, it is just an excuse and I need to be told to “Just Do It!” Thanks.

There’s a line in Pirkey Avot (a six-chapter book of the Mishnah, the first written compilation of Judaism’s Oral Torah) which has the same sentiment. You can do all the holy, wonderful studying and reading possible, but it’s no good unless you put it into actual practice and take it out of the realm of abstract, idealistic theories.

Do – the 2nd most ultimate verb! The 1st, of course, being love. 🙂
