LOAVES ~ 4 ~ U

Autumn is a time of the year that seems to scream: “Write about me!” And there is so much to inspire: the beauty of the changing leaves, the melancholy sense of loss that accompanies the waning of warm weather, the smells, the holidays… And FOOD. The onset of cold weather, the conclusion of the summer harvest and the availability of various winter crops bring out soup chefs, bakers, stew-brewers and the rest of us who just enjoy the fruits of their labors.

For today’s prompt, you may be encouraged to write about a favorite comfort food, its harvest, preparation, its scent–whatever comes to mind. Feel free to write poetry, essay or fiction. Or maybe you would like to share a recipe. Have at it and enjoy the process.

This is a flash fiction piece in response to Victoria's Monday Morning Writing Prompt .

Located on the corner between a laundromat and a vacant parking lot, LOAVES~4~U is a quaint blend of local-cafe'-meets-cosmopolitan-bakery. It is my haven, my sanctuary… the one place that I can go to when in need of comfort. The charming faded blue-and-white checked table cloths with matching cafe' curtains is as welcoming as a steaming cup of caramel flavoured cappuccino, the beverage of choice on this cool autumn afternoon.

The glass counters boast a stunning array of handmade loaves – a different one to suit any mood or occasion. It doesn't matter if you're in need of a "pick-me-upper" or just want to indulge in a spur-of-the-moment-delight, a visit is destined to provide a one-of-its-kind experience.

The tapestry of hand-crafted buns, rolls and breads, packed side by side, a close and comfy arrangement on the glass shelves: bagels, panini, rosemary flax baguettes, ciabatta, pesto and pine nut focaccia, whole grain mesquite buns, grissini, scones; assorted rye loaves such as banana bread, raisin-pecan rye bread, rye and corn bread;  a cosmopolitan community under one roof, a global display of gustatory harmony that would rival any gathering of world leaders at a Peace Conference.

    Mish,
You are so right about the fall. Food just seems to become our source of comfort.
You touched my heart with this short fiction. Bread … MMmmmm … the smell. I grew up right across the street from a famous bread factory – Wonder Bread. They bake all night long. To me there is no gretaer comfort.
This is a fabulous. The last paragraph with the first few words creating an imagery that could be touched is awesome. I cna't say enough good things about this.
    Well done,
    Isadora

Its odd how we all have our own little havens, somewhere to just stop off our hectic lives for five minutes.
The aromas that this conjures up are just delicious. Fresh bread and fresh coffee, in convivial surroundings, bliss!
