Q is for QUISBY

Que sera sera… to this quirky, quintessential and questionable challenge…

The PinYin A to Z Project

Yóu xì bî mò fãn yì fei huà……..

— is an old Chinese philosophy which refers to somebody who has the innate ability to decipher unusual words.

JUST JOKING.

(you can read the details about this challenge and the competition running throughout the month of April)

The word for Day 17 is—

                                              QUISBY

The twin brother to Quasimodo, the "hideous" character in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame who was feared by the townspeople. Rumour has it that Victor Hugo removed Quisby (who was born without the hunch) from the story during the final draft, and then proceeded to re-write the story from scratch.

So that's my definition. What's yours? Post it in the comment box below. Remember you stand to win a prize.

That is the perfect Q phrase for this challenge. Perfect.

  2. Lexa Cain on April 19, 2013 at 12:36 pm

It's the word the United Lispers Coalition is trying to get put into general usage. Its meaning? "Crispy."

Sounds like a new sports game to me.

  4. Carol Kilgore on April 19, 2013 at 2:33 pm

A new species of birds. Looks like a cross between a blue-footed booby and a roseate spoonbill.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:29 pm

I'll first have to google these species… I'm a bit lost when it comes to our feathered friends…

  5. C. Lee McKenzie on April 19, 2013 at 3:00 pm

A word game, not unlike Scrabble, except you must first answer the quiz question before you can lay down the tiles on the board.

  6. Michael Di Gesu on April 19, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Haven't you heard? It's the RAGE at the beach these days… Well, let me enlighten you… Quizby is played with a frisbee BUT you can't fling it UNTIL YOU ANSWER the recipients question. Fun right. Let's think abit as we fry our brains in the sun…. LOL.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:35 pm

After the sun has "fried" the brains, there won't be any energy left to answer questions or fling a frisbee.. LOL

  7. Al Diaz on April 19, 2013 at 5:24 pm

It sounds like a cheese pay to me.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:38 pm

Cheese pay? Well, you've lost me. My brain is non-functional at the moment…

Quisby . . . a game involving a football and a chessboard, and two teams of players.

  9. Pat Hatt on April 19, 2013 at 5:37 pm

Never knew he had a brother that went poof, sounds like a quiz show about a sports goof.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:41 pm

You are surely the master of rhyme, proving it once again time after time…

  10. Julie Flanders on April 19, 2013 at 6:12 pm

Poor Quisby really got screwed over. Left on the cutting room floor, what a shame.

  11. Nancy LaRonda Johnson on April 19, 2013 at 8:40 pm

Yeah, I agree with Julie F!

Another form of quisby is that subtle shock you get when you're slightly electricuted, like when you put your tongue on the knobs of a 9 volt battery.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:48 pm

I'm sure you and Julie have ghosts of characters calling from the cutting room floor LOL.

      Electrocution? As in quiz-z-z-z-z-z-z-by?

  12. Cori Vidae on April 19, 2013 at 10:24 pm

I thought I was going to have to look Quisby up in the dictionary, but then I read your comments LOL

    Great Q post.

  13. Nina Gray on April 20, 2013 at 3:29 am

Quisby – just like frisby but instead of the disc, you throw around quizes to each other!

  14. Medeia Sharif on April 20, 2013 at 5:09 am

It sounds like some mild, non-violent ball game.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:55 pm

This is the 4th or 5th, maybe 6th answer involving a game. Popular choice. It does sound like a calming game… almost passive.

  15. Annalisa Crawford on April 20, 2013 at 3:21 pm

From now on, whenever I decide to rewrite a novel to change a major detail I will call it a Quisby moment! I have many more of these moments than I really ought to 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:57 pm

It actually sounds quite cool… quisby moment… it has a quaint appeal. 🙂

  16. Jennifer S. Pitts on April 20, 2013 at 7:52 pm

A new spelling bee quiz game where you only have ten seconds to spell the word.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 9:58 pm

That sounds like loads of pressure… ten seconds? Eeeeek!

  17. Barbara White Daille on April 21, 2013 at 4:03 pm

The Royal Order of Quisby is the highest rank awarded to people who gather information by relentlesly questioning others.

But I do love your definition, especially the fact that Victor Hugo rewrote the book from scratch.  My hat's off to him!

Fun theme.  Thanks for stopping by my blog.

It gives the word a regal connotation. Great answer. I'm having so much fun with these answers!

  18. Julie on April 21, 2013 at 8:56 pm

These are all good, but I like Michael's beach game the best!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 21, 2013 at 10:05 pm

They are, Julie. Michael's answers have been such fun. I'm going to be in trouble when it comes to choosing just a handful of definitions from the 26 posts. There are so many great ones!

  19. Beverly on April 24, 2013 at 8:36 pm

A variation of rugby wherein the players go pub crawling before the match, resulting in many players forgetting the rules of the game once on the field and ending in quizzical play.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 24, 2013 at 8:52 pm

I love the concept "quizzical play". I'm picturing these big muscled rugby players in a "non-contact quizzical match"… quite a funny image!
