Silence is golden…?

Silence is golden… there are versions of this phrase that date back to as far as Ancient Egypt… and I just discovered that the fuller version reads as follows – speech is silver; silence is golden – though I think I knew that… somewhere at the back of my mind..

But what does it mean? That silence is precious… a valuable commodity? Or something to that effect? It makes me think of the saying: No news is good news? For example, when you don't hear from somebody, then it means that things are okay/running smoothly/everything is allright, blah, blah, blah, blah… But isn't it presumptious to think that all is well and everything is normal? When "silence reigns supreme"(oh how I love that phrase…), then what does that mean…?

Enough of the rambling… So I've been silent for the past week as I was away… on a short break. I missed blog visits and posting comments on blogs as I had no access to the internet (which I thought I would have…) But I'm back now. So for all those who were wondering what happened… nothing much! I did have a good rest, though…

I wonder if the phrase: Silence is platinum, would be more appropriate for the 21st century… after all, this is the metal of choice for its durability… never mind the cost factor!! What do you think?

I've always liked the saying "we were born with two ears and one tongue so that we may hear more and speak less."
Glad you're back and well rested! (:

Yes, it's something to think about… it also brings to mind the saying – some listen but do not hear…  I always say to the learners who don't pay attention, that they must use the "ornaments" on either side of their heads… LOL!

Welcome back! I am happy to hear that you have had a great rest. Sometimes one just needs to take some time off.

Thanks Murees! You are so right about taking some time off… 🙂

    Good morning, Michele!
I like your suggestion "Silence is platinum.' Anyway, stuff happens. It's all good. I don't always get to visit everyone in one week either. Life happens.
    Have a nice day!

Hey Shelly, I hope you're well….  🙂 Yes, and you've made me think of the Lennon saying  – Life is what happens to you when you're busy making plans… or something like that….

in my crazy, loud, hear me over my brothers house,
silence is wishful thinking. i love when they get along, or just go outside!

It sounds wonderful… like my kinda hang-out… though I'm sure you value your moments of peace and quiet from time to time… 🙂

As a child I was always taught that I should listen more and talk less, but I never followed it 😉

As a child, I was such an introvert, that I needed the opposite…  to talk more and listen less! 🙂

Somehow, people seem to feel that silence needs to be filled with any and every sound.  Silence is something to cherish.

I agree! It has its place… a purpose… in the bigger equation that is LIFE…

Glad you're back!  Silence is golden, at least at my pad.  When the kids aren't making a ruckus, and the dog isn't barking, I can actually hear myself think.

Thanks Sherry. I can imagine the combination of Bubba, Schultz and co. It must be quite a boisterous affair!

Appreciating silence is one of my life goals. I'm the one who always has to fill the pauses in conversations.

    • michelle on July 3, 2012 at 7:49 am

I suppose silence can also be deafening…  and therefore somebody has to fill in the conversational pauses? Or something to that effect?

There is something to be said about being in a quiet house when everyone is safely tucked in their beds.  "Silence is platinum" does have a nice ring to it! Glad you had a relaxing break!

  13. michelle on July 3, 2012 at 7:53 am

I think it's a sense of satisfaction…  the end of another day… everyone tucked in bed… you alone with your thoughts…  *sighs* It's conducive to moments of deep reflection. 🙂 I had a nice break, Julie. Thank you!

Silence is a rare commodity, and ever more so in this day and age. I think some people are just in love with the sound of their own voice… Glad you had a nice break!

I tend to agree with the "in-love-with-your-own-voice" syndrome…  there are those who never give others a chance to say something – they hog the entire conversation… thanks Nick!
