Celebrate The Small Things

It's Friday again, which means it's time to celebrate the small things which is a weekly hop hosted by Viklit over at Scribblings Of An Aspiring Author.

This week I'm celebrating the reveal of my A to Z theme which you can find HERE. If you missed my A to Z promo post, then you can read it HERE.

I'm also celebrating SOUTH AFRICAN LIBRARY WEEK: 16-23 MARCH

Libraries have always played a role in education, be it a school, academic, public or special library. In the current environment in which we operate, the public library has, for example, largely fulfilled a school library role to fill the gap left by the lack of school libraries. Apart from the “formal” role that libraries play in this arena, they have also always played an informal role in the education of our communities. The concept of lifelong learning is one embodied in all libraries especially public and community libraries. The fact that any person, young or old, rich or poor, employed or unemployed, can walk into a library and find information (in both electronic and traditional formats) to educate and enrich themselves, is one of the major plusses in the favour of libraries.

In our celebrations for South African Library Week 2013, these are some of the areas that we will lay emphasis on and our messages will be adapted accordingly. The inclusion of the word Yourself also places a responsibility on the individual to empower themselves. The theme will also provide us with an opportunity to bring to the attention of the country and our leaders the role that libraries play in educating communities and the nation.

                                                 *          *          *          *          *         *

We also celebrated HUMAN RIGHTS DAY yesterday, 21 MARCH.

 Human Rights Day is a public holiday in South Africa, giving all citizens the opportunity to reflect on provisions made by the Bill of Rights in the country's constitution, which aims to promote and uphold respect for human rights.

I leave you with some quotes to think about…

"We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colours… but they all have to learn to live in the same box." – Author Unknown.

"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do." – Edward Everett.

"If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain." – Emily Dickinson.

"In Africa there is a concept known as ubuntu – the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others." – Nelson Mandela.

What are you celebrating at the moment? Do you visit the library often or do you prefer to purchase books? Paperback or e-book? Are you ready for the A to Z Challenge in 10 days time? Do you have a memorable quote to share?

    Yay for the theme of unusual words. I hope you have a great blog hop!

    I love libraries and spent so much time in them when I was young. My small town library was like a second home. 🙂

    Mandela had great vision.

    Think the crayon quote is the best.

    I rarely visit our library, but they are vital as it's some people's key reading source.

    Happy library week!

    Beautiful celebrations you're doing, and I will enjoy reading up on your word play ideas.

    Two very important celebration days. I wish there were more public libraries here. No wait, I wish there were more people who likes to read. Then there would be more libraries.

    :wow what great celebrations! I love a good library.

  9. Kim Van Sickler on March 23, 2013 at 1:15 pm

    So many books, so little time. (Actually attributed to Frank Zappa!)

      @Lexa ~ Whenever possible, I still spend time in the library… though I have to admit that those times are dwindling… 🙂

      @Alex ~ A real peoples' person… with such a generous spirit!

      @L.Diane ~ Thanks

      @SK ~ Thank you (3X)

      @Jennifer ~ I hope you find some new words… though I must inform you that there's an initial twist to the word challenge…

      @Nancy ~ I look forward to your visits…

      @Al Diaz ~ That's a logical way of looking at the issue.

      @Viklit~ So do I!

      @Kim ~ Love that quote!

    You're celebrating some fantastic things here.

    Public and school libraries played such an important part of my life.

    Woohoo for Libraries and for Human Rights Day!!! I love libraries. I may have books on my kindle, but when I go to the library and check out books – those are the ones I read first. I just like the feel of a real book in my hands. Libraries are wonderful places!

    The library plad a huge role in my life as a child. I treasured my library card! I love books and if I love a particular book I buy it in Hard cover, unless it only come in soft. But I read lots and lots of ebooks. I want a room dedicated to books, my own library.

    If you are having problems with the dryer, please get it checked. Mine was drying the clothes to an almost crisp before the fire. Obviously something was wrong, but I chalked it up to me setting the heat too high. I think, now, the motor was getting hotter and hotter and I ignored it. Sorry, I'm a little paranoic now.

    There are so many things to celebrate! Love your A-Z theme; ours are very similar. This year's marathon of posts should be fun.

    Libraries are so awesome. I am truly grateful to live in a country where public libraries abound. My town (population 90.000) has three public libraries and a great online library where patrons can download free audiobooks and e-books. On a trip to Europe, my family realized how lucky we are with our libraries because so many towns didn't have them there and people would look at us like we were crazy for even asking.

    I think libraries are important. Long may they continue. Great quotes, I loved the crayon one in particular.

  16. Misha on March 24, 2013 at 6:47 pm

    Celebrated selling my book at last. 😀

  17. shell flower on March 24, 2013 at 7:00 pm

    I nominated you for the Very Inspired Blogger Award over on my blog 🙂

  18. Kittie Howard on March 25, 2013 at 1:45 pm

    All of the quotes were super. I didn't know about the concept of ubuntu and really, really like it. And I'm looking forward to your fun A-Z theme.

    • Michelle Wallace on March 25, 2013 at 5:05 pm

      @Medeia ~ Growing up, the public library was my go-to spot, at least once a week!

      @Tyrean ~ I know what you mean about the feel of the book… the texture… the smell… nothing beats that!

      @Yolanda ~ I don't blame you for being paranoid. One can't be too careful. I've discovered the cause of my washing machine malfunction. But it's too complicated to go into details here… maybe another post…

      @C.Lee ~ I'll definitely swing by to check out your posts. I'm certain they will be stylish, just like you!

      @Shell Flower ~ You ARE lucky. Last week I asked an assistant from our public library about e-book readers. She didn't have an answer and told me to ask the library manageress (who was off that particular day…)

      @Suzanne ~ The crayon quote is priceless! Common sense at its best!

      @Misha ~ You ROCK girl! I'm so thrilled for you!

      @Shell Flower ~ Woo-hoo! Thanks a mil. I'll pop over shortly.

      @Kittie Howard ~ The concept of ubuntu makes perfect sense, since we do not work in isolation. Our writing community is the perfect example.

  19. Nas on March 25, 2013 at 7:43 pm

    Yay! For libraries! Libraries are special places to indulge our dreams in!

    Loved the crayons quote-so true!

  20. Carol Kilgore on March 26, 2013 at 11:42 pm

    Lots of cool things to celebrate! I love your blog challenge theme. I'm hoping I can just keep up through it all. I'm doing A-Z and a blog tour for the first half.

  21. Julie on March 28, 2013 at 4:43 am

    Hope you had a lovely library week! These are all terrific quotes, but the one about crayons is my favorite.

    • Michelle Wallace on March 28, 2013 at 7:45 am

      @Nas ~ Thanks Nas!

      @Carol ~ You'll be fine. Don't stress!

      @Julie ~ The crayon quote sums it up in a neat & colourful package! 🙂
