Whacky Words, Flash Fiction, Of Mist & Magic

It’s back to my Monday posting that I decided upon last year. Thank you to every person who visited my blog last week on IWSG day! I’ve never had so many visitors at once… there was a total of 84 comments. I appreciate every single visitor/commenter!

It’s time for WHACKY WORDS! The first for the new year. Remember, this is supposed to be FUN!

Today’s word is

                                                 LALOCHEZIA

Lalo left, step to the left, lalo right, step to the right, two steps forward and two steps back, two hops forward and two hops back, turn around and touch the ground; click your fingers and face your partner, right leg forward and che-zi-a, left leg forward and che-zi-a…. don’t you recognise it? It’s the new line dance that is taking the world by storm!

dancing dancer ballet jazz tap...                   dancing couple background

That’s my definition. (The word does have a meaning, but you are invited to play along by providing your own original meaning. No cheating and looking up the word. I’ll post the meaning next week). So do you wanna play along? Leave your definition in the comment section below.

I’ve decided that the best way to get back into writing regular flash fiction, is to post my five sentence fiction as I did before.

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week the hostess will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

The memo promises an out-of-the-box investigation.

A cold case from the archives hoping to revive more than just a flagging career.

Recently appointed, the strictly business and no-nonsense ‘new broom’ tactics of the pasty-skinned department head, accompanied by erratic pacing and obsessive popping of antacids, adds an extra layer to the whispered comments ‘on a sweeping mission’ which plagues the corridors.

Forensic reports reveal new evidence destined to intensify the investigation.

Many employees are embroiled in the controversy but a finger points to the pinnacle of the food chain…

My urban fantasy story will be included in the upcoming collaboration Of Mist And Magic. The anthology should be released within the next two weeks. Here’s a peek at the cover!

Isn’t it gorgeous?!

So what have you been busy with? Have you ever tried writing flash fiction?

I’ve been struggling to get back into the swing of things. Besides the new year, it’s also because we’re moving towards mid-summer… the weather has been unbearably hot and humid… leaves one feeling drained… listless… can you believe that on Christmas day the temperature soared to 42 degrees C, which is about 107.6 degrees F? Or thereabouts? Anyway, it may take me some time to get around to visiting blogs… I’ll try my best…

I love your five sentences. That’s what started my love for your blog. Goodie-goodie gumdrops!

    Hugs and chocolate!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:19 am

      Thanks Shelly!
      I love the goodie-goodie gumdrops bit… 🙂

  2. Peaches Ledwidge on January 12, 2015 at 10:40 pm

Do you use the sentences in a project you are working on?

I’m jealous of the weather, not that I want to have it so hot here, just a little warmer.

You’ll get back into the writing groove. Keep writing.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:21 am

      Hi Peaches
No, I don’t. I just read the prompt and go with it… let it take me wherever… it’s an exciting process!
Yes, I’ll just keep on writing! 🙂

  3. Patricia Lynne on January 12, 2015 at 10:42 pm

I like flash fiction. It’s fun to read and fun to write. Your 5 sentences were great.

I’m in the middle of winter here, so nope, can’t believe how hot it is for you because I. Am. Freezing.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:26 am

There’s no writing style that offers more fun than flash fiction!
Freezing weather is always conducive to curling up with a good book… or tucking yourself away in your writing den with some hot chocolate/coffee/your beverage of choice and pounding away…
      Keep warm!

    Michelle, that’s awesome!! Congratulations.
We’re to have freezing rain tomorrow. Fun.
LALOCHEZIA – the Lollapalooza of the cheese world. (Lollapalooza is an annual, huge concert event here in the USA.)

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:28 am

      Thanks Alex!
      Freezing rain = fun. LOL
Your definition sounds very interesting! I’ll have to Google Lollapalooza.

  5. Beth on January 12, 2015 at 11:31 pm

ooh congrats! that cover is amazing! we’re in the dead of winter here, and I actually like the cold, so I’m okay. Although I’m getting antsy for spring! my meaning for Lalochezia: a type of flu the Loch Ness monster gets when he’s been in the water too long? lol

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:30 am

Ah, poor Nessie… since he can’t really escape the water, seems like he’s destined to be stuck with the flu… 🙂

I’m loving the 5-sentence flash. I do like flash and try to write it myself too. It was -2F (that’s somethin’ like -18 I think). So, hiding under piles and piles of blankets!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:32 am

Holly, by my standards, that is SUPER-SUPER-FREEZING! Brrrrrrr….
I don’t think I’ve ever experienced that temperature in my entire life!
      Keep warm!

  7. C. Lee McKenzie on January 13, 2015 at 12:08 am

    Yep. Love the cover!

I’m thinking Lalochezia has a lot to do with laughing. You know LOL. LALO. And then the Cheesy part is this. Are you ready? You’re going to love it.

You know those cheesy jokes, those cornball moments when Mo or Curly try to walk without bumping into walls and don’t? That’s it. That’s the LALOchezia moment. Add that to the dictionary and let’s get on with the next word. Something more challenging. 🙂 Oh, and not too cheesy.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:33 am

…and aren’t we in fine form today?! 🙂
Definition delivered in true Queen Of Glib style!

  8. Trisha on January 13, 2015 at 12:30 am

Absolutely gorgeous book cover! I think I could stare at that for a good, long while 🙂

Congrats on your story being included!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:35 am

I’m also a sucker for great covers… one of those who can stare at a gorgeous cover for ages… 🙂

  9. Medeia Sharif on January 13, 2015 at 9:15 am

Congrats. Mist and Magic has an amazing cover.

LALOCHEZIA – sounds romantic to me.

  10. Michelle Wallace on January 13, 2015 at 11:36 am

It does sound a bit ‘flowery’ (is that the word?) … romance could work! 🙂

  11. Susan Gourley on January 13, 2015 at 7:46 pm

I like your definition. Line dancing brings back memories from my dating days. Could use a little of your heat. I’m busy working on my next romance novel. Not quite 50% done.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 14, 2015 at 2:35 pm

I’m looking forward to our March/April autumn weather which is almost perfect… warm days without humidity, and often accompanied by lovely breeze.. you feel ‘human’ again.
To me, it sounds like you’re making good progress on your current novel.

  12. Murees Dupé on January 13, 2015 at 8:16 pm

That is a great entry. I know what you mean about the heat. It is hot here in Cape Town too, though not so much humid. Just take things easy until you feel better, or have more energy again. This is why I prefer the winter. The summer kicks my butt. Wishing you the best.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 14, 2015 at 2:37 pm

      Thanks Murees!
Cape Town is hot now, but doesn’t have the humidity that we have. I’ll try to take it easy… as much as I can… 🙂

LALOCHEZIA – An international chess tournament.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 14, 2015 at 2:38 pm

      Mmm. Great definition.
      Thanks for playing along, Carol!

  14. Nas on January 14, 2015 at 7:44 am

I love the intriguing cover of your book. Sounds like an interesting story. Congratulations on the upcoming release!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 14, 2015 at 2:39 pm

      Thank you, Nas.
There are quite a few bloggers from our community who are part of the anthology.

  15. L. Diane Wolfe on January 14, 2015 at 1:12 pm

    107 degrees? I would melt.

The book cover is beautiful. Congrats, Michelle.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 14, 2015 at 2:41 pm

Yes, I’m sure you’d really feel it. 🙂
That cover really captures the imagination…

  16. Crystal Collier on January 14, 2015 at 1:47 pm

*high five* (From another Of Mist and Magic contributor.) The anthology is going to be epic.

Love the first five sentences, and for the definition…a Native American word describing the flight patterns of birds of prey. =)

  17. Michelle Wallace on January 14, 2015 at 2:43 pm

    *returns high five*
    Yep, epic is the word!
Native American origin, eh? Love your definition!

  18. Mary Pax on January 14, 2015 at 9:26 pm

Love your characterization of the anti acid popping cop. I want to read more of this story.

    Lalo… whatever

It’s a gangsta hideout where bad guys lay low while things are hot.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:19 pm

Love the gangsta interpretation. I can almost ‘hear’ the Joe Pesci Italian accent from the mafia movies 🙂

  19. Christine Rains on January 15, 2015 at 12:56 am

Your five sentences are great! Good luck getting back into the swing of things. Hot weather just drains me in every way.

LALOCHEZIA: the sloughed off skin in the region behind the knees.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:22 pm

I used to really LOVE the hot weather… back in the day… 🙂
Sloughed off skin? Lalochezia loves the loofah!

  20. Anna on January 15, 2015 at 2:57 pm

I’ve tried flash fiction and it does test the writing skill set. Have a great day, Michelle. 🙂

  21. stephen tremp on January 16, 2015 at 5:25 pm

I don’t write flash fiction mainly because I don’t have time. I’m busy working on my current MS and all the related pre-promotional stuff. But I’d like to one day when the dust settles.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:23 pm

Sounds like you’re really busy, Stephen. Isn’t this your third book…? Or is it fourth? 🙂

  22. joylene on January 17, 2015 at 2:54 pm

Holy macaroni, Michelle! You scared me for a moment. I was dancing along to the words until I got to what I thought was “lick the ground”. Yikes, my tongue was T H I S close to …yuck!

No, if memory serves me correctly, it’s … touch the ground, lick–NO click…”

I hope you know that tune’s gonna be stuck in my head all day.

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:25 pm

LOL! Now I’m also confused. Touch or lick? Or click?

  23. tara tyler on January 19, 2015 at 2:50 pm

congrats on your story in the anthology! and i missed your crazy words.
loved your iwsg intro, beautiful lady! and thanks for the supreme inspiration & quote!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:26 pm

Tara, it’s LOVELY to see you here!
Hope you’re well, my friend! *blowing kisses*

LALOCHEZIA – The latest trend in cheese-scented nail lacquer.

I’m really looking forward to Of Mist and Magic and reading all the stories. And it is a beautiful cover!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:28 pm

      Loni, I LOVE your definition!
Tell me, is there cheese-scented nail lacquer on the market? Never heard of it. Probably is. I wouldn’t be surprised…

  25. elizabeth seckman on January 19, 2015 at 5:48 pm

I do believe Lalochezia is an STD known primarily to the Hawaiian islands.

We’re in the midst of cold here. I’m hearing we may break some cold records. Yay. So excited. Not.

I’m still trying to get around to all the blogs too. Seriously do NOT know how Alex does this!

    • Michelle Wallace on January 20, 2015 at 2:30 pm

      That’s a lovely and exotic name for a STD… 🙂
I do not know how Alex does it!!!
      Keep yourself warm!
