Whacky Words & Flash Fiction

It’s time for WHACKY WORDS! Remember, this is supposed to be FUN!

Thank you to everybody who played along for the previous word. The real meaning of the word Nidification is the act or process of building a nest. http://www.definitions.net/definition/nidification

The two definitions that captured my attention were posted by… Diane Wolfe: It’s a knitting vacation! (Priceless) Beth Ellyn Summer: a vacation where you’re not required to bring i.d. (Clever one) Congratulations ladies!

I enjoyed quite a few other definitions as well. I have to admit that it’s getting more and more difficult to choose…

Today’s word is

                                       OXYACANTHOUS

A seaweed-based emollient added to the facial mask of Revlon’s latest range, especially designed for the metrosexual man on the move!

That’s my definition. (The word does have a meaning, but you are invited to play along by providing your own original meaning. No cheating and looking up the word. I’ll post the meaning next week). So do you wanna play along? Leave your definition in the comment section below.

What is F-S-F all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week the hostess will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

                                                     VILLAINOUS

SOURCE

Like the bent and twisted branches in a dense forest, the concept first reached out to him in a mass of confusion: shapeless, multi-directional and unstructured, clawing around and around, this way and that, as it crept across his mind.

A spark of clarity flared, and the germ of deception wormed its way through the maze.

Nondescript players could snatch ‘the game’ from under the feet of the ‘big players’ by bringing a special brand of expertise to the project.

Under the leadership of a volatile duo, masters of depravity, who were referred to as fire and ice, the status quo could be overturned.

Evil incarnate.

    Evil indeed!
OXYACANTHOUS – the dinosaur equivalent of government intelligence. (At least they called it like it is…)

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:02 pm

Dinosaur equivalent? As in archaic intelligence…?

  2. Southpaw HR Sinclair on February 9, 2015 at 11:44 pm

The seaweed mask is a little scary!

  3. Patricia Lynne on February 10, 2015 at 12:04 am

    OXYACANTHOUS.
Well, it’s not really a definition. It’s a drunk guy writing a story about an ox trying to buy a house but falling asleep in the middle of writing the sentence OX YA CANT HOUSE. He had caplocks on for the entire thing.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:05 pm

Silly, tired and drunk… makes sense why the man botched it…

  4. Peaches Ledwidge on February 10, 2015 at 2:08 am

OXYACANTHOUS. It’s one word for ox, can’t and house. The farmer said he can’t put an ox in a house, so the meaning is no ox house.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:07 pm

      That’s a cute definition!
Reminds me of no woman, no cry; no ox, no house… 🙂

  5. Christine Rains on February 10, 2015 at 2:37 am

    Intense flash piece this week!

OXYACANTHOUS: a type of gas that consists of oxygen and stinky cat house.

  6. krystal jane on February 10, 2015 at 6:11 am

Ha,ha! Your definition is great! 😀

OXYACANTHOUS – the fainting that occurs when you’ve swallowed too much oxygen upon meeting someone you’re a huge, huge fan of.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:13 pm

Sounds like a mass disorder that affects thousands of fans (often at sport stadiums and big concert venues) when they see their favourite celebs… 😀

  7. Susan Gourley on February 10, 2015 at 1:28 pm

    Scary five sentences today.
Oxycanthous- The special ridge of bone on top of the head of oxen that supports their massive horns.

  8. Loni Townsend on February 10, 2015 at 4:54 pm

Ha, I’ve got nothin’ for OXYACANTHOUS. I’m going with yours.

    Creepy five today. Love it!

Sometimes it’s a simple process and the sentences fall into place… other times I struggle for a while… but I LOVE the challenge! 🙂

    Hi, Michelle, ***waving from Florida****

Good piece as always. You’re sooo poetic.

As for the word: it’s someone who I obsesses over the cellulite on their thighs.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:21 pm

      Thank you Shelly! ***waving back***
Poetry is my first love… but has since been ousted by flash fiction (in case you didn’t know)
Cellulite OCD? I suppose that most women have suffered with oxyacanthous at some stage in life…

  12. joylene on February 10, 2015 at 11:38 pm

    OXYACANTHOUS.

A house without oxygen is a Oxyacanthous.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:22 pm

🙂 And this house is located where…? On Mars… maybe?

  13. Beth on February 11, 2015 at 2:55 pm

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:23 pm

LOL Beth! Maybe it means – at a loss for words?

  14. Crystal Collier on February 11, 2015 at 3:17 pm

I’m impressed that as word-savvy as I am, you always find ones I’ve never heard of.

Man, that first sentence in your flash fiction is beautiful. I love the twisting of thoughts and how they creep into consciousness. Very cool.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:24 pm

Ah, thank you Crystal! *passes some delicious cheese*

  15. Mary Pax on February 11, 2015 at 8:22 pm

It’s a graduate from the best dinosaur uni.

Bent and twisted branches are so inspiring. I love taking photos of those. Love the fiction you wrote to accompany it.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:27 pm

      I LOVE your definition, Mary!
For some reason, your comment just reminded me of The Tumbas.

  16. Tyrean on February 12, 2015 at 2:07 am

    Great flash!

    Definition: Oxymoronic friendships.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:28 pm

Ha! Love your oxymoronic reference! Too cute! 🙂

  17. Sherry Ellis on February 12, 2015 at 6:00 pm

Oxycanthous is a type of dinosaur that used up a lot of oxygen and began the greenhouse effect, which is still a huge problem today.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:29 pm

It does sound like a word that belongs to the dinosaur era…

  18. Carol Kilgore on February 13, 2015 at 12:27 am

    Love your creepy story!

Oxycanthous is a new hybrid anthurium lily with sharp edges.

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:33 pm

  20. Bronwyn Marcus on February 13, 2015 at 12:40 pm

OXYACANTHOUS: Archaic derogatory curse word for someone so worthless that they shouldn’t waste oxygen 😉

    • Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:35 pm

      Legit curse. LOL
That’s a great definition! Thanks for playing along! 🙂

  21. C. Lee McKenzie on February 13, 2015 at 4:08 pm

That image and your flash fiction were a perfect match. Gave me the shivers!

  22. Toi Thomas on February 14, 2015 at 9:02 pm

I’m loving your flash fiction; the image in beautiful.

As for OXYACANTHOUS, I’d say is an old world theatrical method of singing that requires a lot of heavy breathing and which leaves the audience feeling a little awkward when it’s all over.

  23. Michelle Wallace on February 15, 2015 at 7:38 pm

An uncomfortable experience for both singer and audience? Good one.
