Y is for YENTL

Welcome to Day 25 of the Third Annual A to Z Challenge!

My theme my 26 fiction posts will revolve around something musical – it could be anything, as long as it's musically-related… maybe a song title, an artist/band, musical terminology, musical instruments, words relating to sound/rhythm/movement/dance etc.

MUSICAL ASSOCIATION/CONNECTION. YENTL – this is a 1983 romantic musical drama film from MGM, starring Barbara Streisand and based on the play of the same name. The film's musical score and songs were composed by Michel Legrand.

The lone, haunting sound of a flute filled the air, shattering the stark serenity of the twilight hour.

I wondered again, about the source of that heart-wrenching yet nostalgic melody, Papa Can You Hear Me, that penetrated the darkness, and the anguish felt by the flute player…

For three weeks, the wistful sound had become my constant companion,  like a faithful ally helping to soothe my fears. I embraced it as one would an old familiar friend.

Seconds, or was it minutes, or an hour maybe, passed .

I waited expectantly, with bated breathe, for the dying strains, which lingered imperceptibly, almost painfully, and then receded into the distant night, becoming fainter and fainter…

A haunting piece. The flute took me back to my school days wherein I had started playing the flute for the school band.

    • michelle on April 30, 2012 at 7:37 pm

It's a simple instrument to learn as a youngster, and quite nifty too… you can carry it wherever you go… so how long did you play in the school band?

I'll have to dig out my Yentl soundtrack. I haven't listened to it in awhile.

I love Barbara Streisand. She is one of two artists, who can move me to tears with that distinct voice…

Barbara Streisand was one of a kind – amazing. And the piece you wrote did have a haunted sound to it. I agree with eveyone else here.

    • michelle on April 30, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Now that I come to think of it, Barbara Streisand's voice also has that sad and haunting quality…  she is MORE than amazing… 🙂
