A is for AMAZIA

ATTENTION ALL: a hearty welcome to all you amazing and anxious A-post arrivals who are making an appearance at this humble abode today! All aboard? Away we go!

Today is Day 1 of the PinYin Word Project. On Friday, I posted a little teaser to explain what this challenge is all about.

The PinYin A to Z Project

Yóu xì bî mò fãn yì fei huà……..

… is an old Chinese philosophy which refers to somebody who has the innate ability to decipher unusual words.

JUST JOKING!!

Anyway, for the entire month of April, I'm going to come up with my own definitions for the words. You are all invited to join in the fun. Leave your definitions in the corresponding comments. Have a go – the crazier, the better. At the end of the challenge, I will provide all the correct definitions for these words.

On 01st May, I will post about 5 or 6 or 7 or whatever… a collection of my favourite definitions. It all depends on my mood at that particular moment! The readers will get a chance to vote on their favourites. The winner will win a prize. Remember, this is meant to be fun! The word for Day 1 is—————-

                                             AMAZIA

This refers to a case of mass shock! Like a collective gasp of disbelief!

Imagine the following: a sea of faces + a mexican wave type of technique + a shock registering .8 on the Shrochter Scale?

SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

So that's my definition. What's yours? Post it in the comment box below. Remember you stand to win a prize!

    Now I like the sound of this word. Amazia! Could also be in reference to the taste of an excellent bottle of wine. (;

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 2:45 pm

      Could be… as long as it's sweet… maybe a rose' ?

  2. Julie on April 1, 2013 at 9:07 am

I think it has to do with very tall women (or short, confident ones in heels) who rule the world in their pajamas.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 2:48 pm

I'm of the short variety (so says hubby)… though I've given up on heels… I'm on my feet too much… so I won't fit into the category… 🙂 Hey, I'm quite a ball of energy in my PJ's… so maybe I do qualify after all…

  3. Misha on April 1, 2013 at 9:09 am

It is a word with origins in Latin meaning the dearth of maize flour exactly when you need it to thicken a sauce.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 2:49 pm

Hahahahaha! You really cracked me up with this one! Now my "sauce-making experiences" will never be the same again!

  4. Barbara White Daille on April 1, 2013 at 11:08 am

Michelle – love all your A words in your Attention line. They certainly put me on Alert. 😉

As for Amazia – why, it's a phobia, of course! Fear of being Amazed.

    Have fun with your challenge.

    Best,

    Barbara

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 2:51 pm

Thanks for playing along Barbara! So that's the problem with all those emotion-less, long-faced people who are unfazed by life's every day miracles?! 🙂

Amazia-n- A psychological diagnostic criteria that describes an individual who is regularly shocked and amazed by regular and/or mundane things. Individuals suffering from this disorder often react to superficial greetings, everyday events and inanimate objects with awe and are frequently overwhelmed by ordinary and/or common place occurrences

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Wow! This is in direct contrast to Barbara's people (see answer above your one…) Like alternate universes…? Seems these people need to associate with one another to balance out the levels of Amazia in the two places… 🙂

  6. Ida Chiavaro on April 1, 2013 at 12:24 pm

This sounds like fun – made up words with made up meanings – In his state of amazia he was unable to navigate the streets of New York. An inability to decipher patterns or codes. – though I just googled it and discovered it is a medical condition to do with breasts, maybe he is unable to navigate the contours a the female body 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Ahhh! Undecipherable patterns and codes… love the element of mystery… very interesting answer! 🙂

  7. mary aalgaard on April 1, 2013 at 12:26 pm

Amazia is a country where you live in constant wonder. It is full of surprise twists and turns and people with enormous amounts of creativity. I would like to build a home made out of beads in Amazia.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Ooooh, I can picture this wonderfully artisitic country! Sounds delightful. I want to go there. Please take me with you… 🙂

  8. Susan Gourley on April 1, 2013 at 1:23 pm

I think Amazia is an indoor play park for little kids with lots of ball pits and slime bogs, kind of Nickelodeon for everyone.

  9. Jay Noel on April 1, 2013 at 1:29 pm

    I LOVE this!!!!!

Hopefully, your posts will make us all experience amazia!

  10. Carolyn Brown on April 1, 2013 at 1:35 pm

Amazia – an deadly extract from a multi-color flower found only in Brazil along the banks of the Amazon River.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 3:09 pm

Exotic deadly beauty? Mmm… sounds like a story idea…

  13. Clarissa Draper on April 1, 2013 at 2:32 pm

Well, ama means a Japanese diver, usually a woman, who tends underwater oyster beds used in the cultivation of pearls and zia means fear so…

it's the fear of woman Japanese pearl divers who can hold their breaths longer than fish.

  14. C. Lee McKenzie on April 1, 2013 at 3:05 pm

Amazia=The condition of being lost or unable to figure a way out.

    He's afflicted by amazia. 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 3:14 pm

…mmm, I wonder if writers are afflicted by the mental version of this ailment when hit by "writer's block"? 🙂

  15. Alex J. Cavanaugh on April 1, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Amazia is the Italian word for amazing. (Add the accent and you'll see what I mean.)

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:18 pm

Italian? Okay, here goes: Ciao donna. Si indossa un bel vestito… amazia! 🙂 Something like that… you're right, it does fit in Alex!

  16. DL Hammons on April 1, 2013 at 3:29 pm

  17. J. A. Bennett on April 1, 2013 at 5:04 pm

For a second when I read the title I thought you had just forgetten to finish spelling the word Amazing, so I think your definition fits perfectly!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:21 pm

J-e-n-n-i-e… that's taking the easy way out! I wanted your original definition. 🙂 Thanks for swinging by!

  18. S.P.Bowers on April 1, 2013 at 5:32 pm

What an interesting idea for A-Z. Hubby tells me I make up words all the time….

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Hey Sara, your hubby is one smart guy! You are a wordsmith! 🙂

  19. Murees Dupé on April 1, 2013 at 5:35 pm

Sounds like it could actually be someone's first name. Great definition by the way.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Yes, it could. Quite an exotic first name. One that belongs in a Fantasy novel! Thanks Murees! 🙂

  20. Michael Offutt on April 1, 2013 at 5:55 pm

Amazia-A place in asia where people are amazed to see you.

  21. Mel Kinnel (@TizMellyMel) on April 1, 2013 at 6:01 pm

Amazia refers to amnesia that has been brought on by outlandish fashion sense. LOL! I can tell that I'm going to really like this theme! *cues evil laugh*

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Smart one Mel! 🙂 I'm wondering exactly what fashion you had in mind…Glad you're playing along!

  22. Nick Wilford on April 1, 2013 at 6:02 pm

The condition of not being able to escape from mazes. I guess it's related to Lee's but more literal.

    Great idea!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Ha! That explanation fits nicely… a rat trapped in a maze would experience this…

  23. Gwen Gardner on April 1, 2013 at 6:11 pm

It's the land of Amazia where the Amazians live. But you have to watch out because sometimes UnAmazians try to invade…

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Interesting. I'm wondering what type of world you're referring to… sounds like a clash- of-the-warriors-type of situation… maybe post-apocalyptic…?

  24. Michael Di Gesu on April 1, 2013 at 6:18 pm

    You zany…

Bring in more bloggers for me to take…

    Fanning ying phrases ….

Feigning the hula to entertain me!

  25. PK Hrezo on April 1, 2013 at 6:37 pm

Love your def! Let's see.. Amazia is the new fragrance by Versace with Jennifer Hudson as the model/spokesperson.

    hee hee… Happy A-Z!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 1, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Ahh! A new perfume? Mmm… nice definition! It does sound like perfume…

  26. Heather M. Gardner on April 1, 2013 at 7:01 pm

This is going to be fun! I like your definition!

    Amazia – Amazed in Utopia!

    Heather

  27. Nancy LaRonda Johnson on April 1, 2013 at 8:16 pm

I love your definition. But I'll say it's an explicative that means the opposite of amazing. It's said when something happens that's downright horrendous, like a papercut on your tongue, or breaking a big toe trying to jump over a concrete porch

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:42 am

OUCH! That really, really hurt! The tongue and toe are such super-sensitive spots!

  28. Ciara Knight on April 1, 2013 at 9:39 pm

I like your definition. This is going to be a fun month.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:43 am

Fun! Fun! Fun! That's the name of the game. I'm aiming for some relaxation and a good laugh!

  29. Mina B on April 1, 2013 at 11:06 pm

    Amazia…insanely good pizza. It's amazia!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:45 am

Pizza? AMAZIA! Mama mia! Oooh… it fits Mina. (I didn't even know that I can speak Italian…) he!he!

  30. Amy Tilson on April 1, 2013 at 11:57 pm

Amazia is actually the latest Wii FIt game where you have to contort your body to work through a maze of fitness obstacles. At the end you look AMAZIA! (This is fun! Thanks for stopping by earlier.)

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:58 am

Amazing-looking body all fit and toned… thanks to the amazing Amazia Wi-FIt game? Great definition!

  31. Guilie on April 2, 2013 at 12:13 am

Hahahahah… Love it, Michelle! I hate to break it to you, though… You're all wrong. I happen to know for a fact that AMAZIA is the mythical land where extraordinary warriors of the Churémpirira tribe went when they died–a kind of bellicose heaven, if you will. It is, of course, the root of the word Amazon–both river and jungle. Sorry, rainforest. Greenery. Whatever.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:48 am

Mythical land… oooh, that's a good twist… and the tribe's name is also a tongue twister!

  32. Medeia Sharif on April 2, 2013 at 1:49 am

I've never heard of Amazia before, but that graphic looks appropriate.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:49 am

It seemed to sum up the concept! So you're with me on this one? Great minds think alike etc. etc. 🙂

  33. Connie Gruning on April 2, 2013 at 3:21 am

Amazia the art of being able to forget everything!

  34. Lynda R Young on April 2, 2013 at 6:08 am

Your definition is a huge win and I couldn't possibly do better than that. Plus it brought a smile to my face (another win).

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 6:54 am

Your win-win comment brought a smile to my face, Lynda! Thanks for popping in!

  35. Damyanti on April 2, 2013 at 7:39 am

Amazia? Tho I love your definition, it's actually all about being in a maze. Like I'm in a maze of blogs and comments these days– I'm in Amazia 😉

  36. Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 8:39 am

I definitely feel like I'm in Amazia… a mass of confusion… So many blogs, so little time! 🙂

  37. Crystal Collier on April 2, 2013 at 11:37 am

Awesome! I love it! Hm, let's see? Amazia– A native American sacrificial flat bread. =)

    • Michelle Wallace on April 2, 2013 at 12:18 pm

This is the first "tasty" definition… mmm… this makes Amazia multi-sensory too! 🙂

  38. Tia Bach on April 2, 2013 at 1:36 pm

What a fun idea for the month. At first glance, I thought Amazia would mean an amazing idea. Appropriate since your theme is just that. I'm looking forward to visiting more this month.

  40. Sherry Ellis on April 2, 2013 at 6:12 pm

I think its what you get when your lost in a maze – kind of like amnesia – amazia!

  41. Lara Lacombe on April 2, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Amazia (n): a psychological condition manifesting as a confused daze, observed in people who have recently been exposed to amazing circumstances.
