Blogfest Day 2 ~ B is for Baloo … Bear Necessity

There is such a wide range of toys available on the market today . But I want to talk about basic toys . Your simple girl's doll or boy's car . But I'm from another era , I suppose … Your basic doll/car is out of fashion . As outdated as Noah's ark . The world of technology rules Toyland …

My all-time favourite toy is the 108 year old teddy bear . With his soft coat , sad eyes and gentle expression  , he is endearing , warm and huggable . And wholesome . And dependable . The teddy bear has a definitive charisma . It's something unfathomable , inexplicable … but you can feel it …

And in my ideal world , every little kid in the universe who is presented with his/her first toy EVER , is given a teddy bear . Especially children under the age of 8 years . These are the formative years when kids are really impressionable . A teddy bear is a constant friend , comforter and confidant . A symbol of love and caring that is universally accepted . A global phenomenon . There are many famous teddies such as Winnie-The-Pooh , Rupert the Bear , Paddington Bear , Smokey the Bear , The Care Bears , Yogi Bear , Gummi Bears … and they all have some sort of psychological power that helps in the healing process . And this is not a new concept . There is an entire study devoted to Teddy Bear Therapy .

We live in a world where adults and children lack the healing power of touch . We suffer from touch deprivation and hug inhibition . We need medication and pills to heal us . Yet we forget about  the healing touch of love . When we touch we connect , we bond , we belong . And a teddy bear evokes a feeling of belonging . No other toy can come close to it . It's that warm , fuzzy feeling inside that says we are a team . We belong together .

As Baloo , from The Jungle Book , sings : "Look for the bear necessities , the simple bear necessities , forget about your worries and your strife ….

Teddy Bear is a simple bear … a necessity in a child's life !!

    Hi Michelle!
Thanks so much for visiting my blog, I'm so glad to have discovered yours! I do love the Lao Tzu quote and that's so cool that it is an inspiration for your blog as well.
I love this post as I adore teddy bears, and always have.  Now I will be singing the "bear necessities" in my head for the rest of the day! 😉
    Cute post!

I so agree. When you're young, nothing beats hugging your teddy bear when you're sad. Great post.

Whether you’re an adult or a child , I think the most spontaneous reaction to a teddy , is to hug him . Thanks Vanessa ! 🙂

Excellent post. I really hadn't read much about this or even thought a lot about it, but it makes perfect sense. Definitely going to be thinking about it. Thanks 🙂

I still have a stuffed bear that I got in grade school. I can't bring myself to part with it.

I think lots of adults keep a stuffed toy from childhood days ! The fact that you’re so attached to your bear , proves that teddy bears DO invoke a sense of belonging ! 🙂

Teddy bears DO invoke a sense of belonging. So much so that I still love them and love going to the bear-making-factory to make them for those I love. Such an insightful post 🙂

I had a Teddy Bear, but he wasn't soft – he was Teddy Ruxpin and you pulled his cord to hear him talk.

Hey Alex ~~ the fact remains , you still had a teddy … and you remember things about him … 🙂

I still love teddy bears. I don't remember owning very many but I still have the bear I made when I was younger at Build A Bear. And I have a doctor dressed bear that my sister gave me for Christmas almost 5 years ago that she called Dr. Bearymore. (She was 19 at the time.) Good post.
