B is for BOSSA NOVA
Welcome to Day 2 of the Third Annual A to Z Challenge!
My theme – my 26 fiction posts will revolve around something musical – it could be anything, as long as it's musically-related… maybe a song title, an artist/band, musical terminology, musical instruments, words relating to sound/rhythm/movement/dance etc. I'm feeling a little better today – not so apprehensive… but we'll see…
MUSICAL CONNECTION/ASSOCIATION. BOSSA NOVA – style of Brazilian music.
In my mind’s eye, she belonged on the beach, red hibiscus in her long wavy hair, sarong wrapped around her cocoa, bikini-clad body, sipping on a pina colada… a snazzy Girl from Ipanema.
Something about Mrs. Fernandez reminded me of a samba .
I struggled to fathom exactly what the connection was… but it eluded me.
Until the day she walked pass my desk and the penny dropped!
The beads!
That was it!
She wore them around her neck and hanging down in front.
Five, long multi-coloured strands that moved around as she walked, her step purposeful and strident, yet graceful… with a fiery dose of Latino flair in the sway of her rounded hips.
They swished smoothly, to and fro in a distinct rhythm… this way and that… just like the bossa nova… bossa nova beads moving in time to an unheard Brazilian beat.
Two weeks have sinced passed.
Mrs. F has returned from a hiatus, but the bossa nova has fizzled, the funk replaced by a distinct lacklustre…
… and the beads are gone!

GENRE: FICTION
Wow!! Your description of this character is very easy to see in my head. It inspires a new doll design for me:).
Thanks for your comment. I will keep in touch with your blog. Yes, it takes just a little bit of insanity to do the A to Z challenge.

I wondered about your reaction to my character… am thrilled that the description inspired a new doll! Your dolls are really something else… really special… 🙂
Hi Michelle. Admire that you can pick one topic to write about. I'm all over the place, basically a jack of all-master of some.
P.S. Thanks for dropping by my Blog, and yes the knee is healing well.
This was so beautifully written! I could picture the scene being acted out on a big screen!
Thanks Julie… big screen vision – now that's big league!
I'm actually trying to challenge myself by posting themed fiction. We'll see how it plays out…
I love latin music. Come to think of it, I love all kinds of music especially the kind that gets my feet moving. And as usual, you deliver a beautifully written segment with ease and a crystal clear description. Love it. And might I add, Mrs. F really knows how to accessorize!
The beads are gorgeous… aren't they?
I also LOVE Latin music… very much so… and love to watch Latin dancing as well…
Thanks for visiting my blog thanks to A-Z! 🙂 Those beads are beautiful! My father was from S. America and he loved his Latin music.
Thanks Jojo 🙂 That means you probably know quite a bit about Latino music…
Love the music theme! Bossa Nova, I alwys thought, sounded like some sort of exotic dessert! Yum! Though, yes, I knew it was a dance. Love your site!
Come to think of it, sounds like a fresh cream-styled dessert… ooooh, delicious… the dance is just as "yummy"… thanks for the visit!
Like this, and those beads are fabulous. I can almost picture the woman wearing them.
The beads really are striking… makes for a vivid picture… 🙂
Poor Mrs. F! I wonder what happened to her during those two weeks, that robbed her of her flair. Good story — it's got me caring about the character in that short bit!

I think it's the saddest thing when somebody so full of life loses that sparkle… thanks for the positive feedback…
There's a recap of one West Wing episode on IMDB called "Blame it on the Bossa Nova" and I've never bothered looking it up to figure it out. Thanks for clearing it up for me! Also–love those beads!
Glad that it shed some light on that aspect… and thanks for swinging by…
I am loving it, if the warm up one was melancholic, this is tantalising. You made the picture come alive in my head which means a writer's job has been done. 🙂
Thanks for the thumbs-up Rek! I really appreciate it!
This is wonderful. You've captured the rhythm of the music in your words.
Thank you Lynda.
Love it!
I'm glad – thanks!
I'll now be singing "The Girl from Ipanema" for the rest of the evening — and may start dancing! Love that rhythm.
I love that song! One of my favourite jazz pieces…
Very cool how you made the beads part of the music and therefore part of the woman's magic.
The beads are an integral part of her allure…
Great story and great beads. Loved everything about this post. I hope someday Mrs Fernandez gets both her beads and her groove back.

I thought that it might appeal to you… after all, you create such wonderful pieces of beaded jewellery! The secret lies in the beads – they will help to revive her flagging spirits!
Enjoyed your writing, Michelle. I've tried to do fiction and it always fizzles out. :>( I'm trying not to be envious. Thanks for visiting my blog. See you again soon.
Try again Ms. Pat! Don't give up! 🙂 Thanks for the visit.
Great theme for the challenge!
