DARKNESS … – Writer In Transit

DARKNESS …

This is a flash fiction piece , in response to Victoria's Monday Morning Writing prompt . With the arrival of Autumn in the northern hemisphere  , the writer is asked to consider the darkening aspects of the season . You can take it wherever you like : nighttime , moods , shortening of daylight , personalities . The door is wide open , so let's go out into that dark night .

He dreaded the time of year , the transition from summer into autumn . It conjured such memories …

The cool crisp air that had matched her cooling disposition . The trees stripped down to their bare skin a stark reminder of the mask removed , exposing the cold , hard reality … out in the open … baring all …

The seasonal shift had mirrored her shifting attitude . So subtle at first , that it was barely noticeable .

The spontaneous phone chats , once a regular feature , dwindled . Autumn marched on .

Daily notelets secured by colourful fridge magnets became scarce . Autumn trudged along .

Morning coffee in bed , a staunch ritual , was replaced by Saturday morning coffee , gulped down in a hurry as the weekend monster crept into the equation … and while nature continued to prepare for winter hibernation , he watched her retreat into a dark and brooding world of her own .

Autumn dragged its heels … moving to the rhythm of an ever-widening chasm …

This is fabulous writing, capturing the realities of a cold chasm between two souls, ever growing wider and more difficult to bridge.

Thanks for your kind comments … I really appreciate the feedback .
If you think about it , this scenario is very common , it mirrors a real-life situation !

Well penned flash fiction, Mish. I know that I have experienced the fading of a love relationship that came on with the transistion between summer and autumn. There is something so wistful about this time of the year, here. Are you moving into spring now, in your part of the world?
    Thanks for joining.

Thank you Victoria . We are moving into spring at the moment , though it seems to be an extremely slow process this time round , what with the erratic weather patterns … cold , wet miserable weather one day , and then warm , sunny weather the next day . Oh well , I suppose the confusing weather is actually a global phenomenon …

You capture the sense of a fading season and a failing love well – subtly, the way such things often happen.
