D is for DASHPOT

Dudes and Dudettes!

I declare: your daily dose of diligence, dished out to de-stress, and destined to destroy your dampened spirits and downheartedness…

D'oh to doomsayers who declare us to be dotty, self-deluded dimwits. Dare I say, don't disregard us daring and dazzling dreamers!

Dang! Duty demands I gotta dash!

                                       DASHPOT

This is an idiot who is always on the move… dashing from one place to the next in total confusion…

I'm so that dude in the picture. I hate to admit it, but I get frantic at times.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 2:18 pm

You're not alone. We all have our dizzy "dashpot moments" 🙂

  2. mary aalgaard on April 4, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Dashpot – the pee trough at the ball park so guys can dash in, pee, dash out, and barely miss a pitch!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 2:19 pm

I LOVE this! The mental image is hilarious… I'm laughing so hard… 🙂

    • Ida Chiavaro on April 4, 2013 at 5:02 pm

  3. mary aalgaard on April 4, 2013 at 1:48 pm

Cute new look. How do I go to older posts?

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 2:21 pm

Thanks Mary. Scroll all the way down to the end of this page. You'll see a link to the previous post.

First of all…I LOVE the new look.

Dashpot – A witches bowl where she mixes her potions.

"Be a dearie an' snatch me one of those dashpots behind you.  Make sure its' the red one, love.  Those are the best for love potions."

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 6:01 pm

      Thanks Mina!

Bubble bubble, toil and trouble… just came to mind this minute…  sort of like a miniature cauldron…?

  5. Clarissa Draper on April 4, 2013 at 4:23 pm

It's a cook that doesn't follow recipes. Just a dash of this and a dash of that goes into the pot. Of course, the cook really isn't that great.

  6. Ida Chiavaro on April 4, 2013 at 5:05 pm

I think, I'll be using this word a lot – all of the suggestions work for me – I have definitely been a dashpot since this challenge started, I've got to get clean my dashpot, but before I do – I have to run and use the dashpot downstairs.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 6:05 pm

You are the embodiment of the word dashpot in all it's different forms? Thanks Ms. Dashpot! 🙂

  7. Maïa on April 4, 2013 at 5:31 pm

I love your A-Z theme and the playfulness of it all!

  8. Al Diaz on April 4, 2013 at 5:43 pm

Ah, I know, I know! The pot where you can cook fast food!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 6:06 pm

That's quite a pot. You could be on to something here. Where can we get hold of it Al?

  9. Carol Kilgore on April 4, 2013 at 5:54 pm

Dashpot – that's where you toss all those overused, unnecessary, and incorrect hyphens and dashes of all sizes that the editor strikes from your manuscript 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on April 4, 2013 at 6:10 pm

I LOVE it! Not a bad idea. You could be sitting on a gold mine with this container.

Hey Carol, you're getting quite good at this. 🙂

  10. J. A. Bennett on April 4, 2013 at 6:10 pm

    If that's your defintion, I think I'm a dashpot, lol! 😉

  11. Hart Johnson on April 4, 2013 at 6:50 pm

Dashpot:  A leafy herb that when smoked causes people to abuse punctuation.  *nods*  fun post!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:04 am

I abuse the ellipses… and that's without smoking the leafy herb! Maybe I need this herb, it might have the reverse effect…? Who knows? Thanks Hart!

  12. L. Diane Wolfe on April 4, 2013 at 6:59 pm

Where unused dashes go to die.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:06 am

I can imagine that CP's & editors go through lots of these containers…

  13. Alex J. Cavanaugh on April 4, 2013 at 7:10 pm

It's an extra feature on a car – a toilet in the dashboard.

  14. Mary on April 4, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Dashpot = a crock in which a writer keeps his/her supply of dashes. There are only so many and then they're gone.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:09 am

A limited supply of dashes would be a good thing? It would eliminate abuse of the punctuation… a handy utensil for a writer, wouldn't you agree?

  15. Tyrean on April 4, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Hilarious definitions in the comments, and on your post! Loving this theme!

Dashpot – someone who's addicted to dashes in their writing. I think I would be an ellipsespot in that case.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:10 am

That makes two of us… I should be fined for it! *shakes head*

  16. Karen Tamara on April 4, 2013 at 10:12 pm

Dashpot: A boy who picks pockets on the crowded sidewalks of 17th century England.

ex: "Ee's a dashpot 'ee is. Took all me money!"

    Loved this posts! Great fun!

    Karen

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:13 am

      I think he's a part of Oliver Twist's crew… a great definition!

  17. C. Lee McKenzie on April 4, 2013 at 10:14 pm

Dashpot=a writer with a small bladder and poor scheduling skills.

Sentence: I'm such a dashpot when I'm in final edits.

Derivation: Late Latin, usually referring to temple scribes low on ink and coming up on deadline.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:16 am

Hahahahaha! Small bladder? Poor scheduling skills? Late Latin? This is too funny C.Lee…

  18. Wayne Assiratti on April 4, 2013 at 10:25 pm

    I like this game.

Dashpot: def. A type of spitoon used in saloons and bars in the midwest during the great goldrush. As cowboys chewed many types of tobacco spitoons were prevalent for them to spit into instead of the floor. Dashpots were the ones at the doo with a wider brim, more like a bowl or small trough for the busy gold prospector to eject the contents of his or her mouth when running to stake a new claim they had just got wind of. For example:

"Tex ran toward the swinging door of the saloon when the news of the new vein in the creek hit town. He spat out his 'bacco, whoch hit the dashpot with a surprising clang. He thought he heard the piano player say "B Flat…" as he swung onto his horse."

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:20 am

This is REALLY good, Wayne! Vivid… and absolutely entertaining! The scenario played out in my mind's eye… and I love your attention to detail… 🙂 Thanks for playing along!

  19. Cindy Dwyer on April 4, 2013 at 10:55 pm

What a fun idea. Next time I'll know to think of my own definition before reading the others!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:21 am

Thanks for popping in, Cindy. I look forward to your definitions!

  20. Mark Means on April 4, 2013 at 11:30 pm

You are Definitely Delighting with your Diligent Dedication to Dynamic Definitions 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:24 am

Well, you got me… I'm speechless at the moment! Mark, you are The Dude when it comes to response… quick on the draw! 🙂

  21. Nick Wilford on April 4, 2013 at 11:33 pm

Similar to a chamber pot under the bed, if you can't get to the bathroom in time!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:30 am

Probably quite useful in nursing homes/old-aged homes….

  22. Elizabeth@Transitional-Woman on April 4, 2013 at 11:52 pm

Don't think I can come up with anything better than I read in the comments. Fun, fun, fun!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:32 am

I'm having such a blast! This is a great collection of definitions. Thanks for popping in.

  23. Jessica on April 5, 2013 at 12:39 am

I love this!  How creative 🙂 You definitely caught my attention.

    Have fun with a-z.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:33 am

Hope to see you here again, Jessica! 🙂 Pop in… and play along. It's lots of fun!

  24. shell flower on April 5, 2013 at 12:55 am

I love a dotty dashpot! My definition is: dashpot – the inkwell of a frustrated writer.

    Love your new blog design.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:35 am

I can picture that messy inkwell… and the (maybe) doodles on the page with the writer hovering over it… hey, that's me!!

  25. Nancy LaRonda Johnson on April 5, 2013 at 1:53 am

That's obvious! A dashpot is an ashtray that is compact and portable for you to pull out of your pocket when you need to ask a single, tall, dark and handsome, though not bright enough to not smoke, man to put out his cigarette, of course. 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:37 am

Hopefully the "not bright enough to not smoke" guy gets the message when you present him with the dashpot!! 🙂

  26. Michael Di Gesu on April 5, 2013 at 2:04 am

    What a hysterical image!

dashpot… Well lets go literal here…. Lol.  A pot sits on the stove… Sprouts legs  at the first sign if heat and dashes out if sight.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:38 am

Love the literal take on the word. Nice to see you here again, Michael.

  27. Kimberly Gabriel on April 5, 2013 at 2:11 am

My goal is to use this word this weekend. Ha!

  28. Lara Lacombe on April 5, 2013 at 4:30 am

Dashpot (n): a cooking utensil, used to deliver a 'dash' of an ingredient.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:40 am

I'm imagining a computerised state-of-the-art type of mini measuring utensil? Whatdya think?

  29. Lynda R Young on April 5, 2013 at 5:55 am

A dashpot is a pot that boils water faster than most…

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:42 am

I need that dashpot. My kettle stopped working and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. *sighs* It's no excuse though…

  30. Medeia Sharif on April 5, 2013 at 6:59 am

I've come across a few people like this.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 5, 2013 at 8:55 am

Me too. Though I shouldn't talk. I'm one of them… sometimes… not all the time…

  31. Duncan on April 5, 2013 at 7:01 am

I like your definition. Great stuff!

  32. J.L. Campbell on April 6, 2013 at 2:34 am

I think I'm going to put this one into use. 😀

    • Michelle Wallace on April 6, 2013 at 9:49 am

It's a quaint and delightful word which can be used just about ANYWHERE… 🙂

  33. Julie on April 6, 2013 at 9:15 am

I keep meaning to tell you how delovely your new site looks!  Sorry I didn't get here sooner, but I ran into this dishelved derelict drug dealer..He doused me in Drambuie, as we danced away the night. When my devasted husband found us, the dashpot drove his dirt bike out of town.
