E is for ENSEMBLE

Welcome to Day 5 of the Third Annual A to Z Challenge!

My theme my 26 fiction posts will revolve around something musical – it could be anything, as long as it's musically-related… maybe a song title, an artist/band, musical terminology, musical instruments, words relating to sound/rhythm/movement/dance etc.

MUSICAL ASSOCIATION/CONNECTION. ENSEMBLE – the performance of a group of instruments in the orchestra or voices in a chorus.

“The polka dot t-shirt, straw fedora and black-rimmed glasses comprise the perfect party ensemble for cool dudes.” I could hear his geekish voice echo in my ears.

No way on earth was I wearing that get-up! I wouldn’t be caught dead in that…

“Polka dots? Glasses? No way… I have a reputation to maintain, or have you forgotten ?”

“I promise you, it’s not what you think. You’ve gotta keep an open mind!”

“No way! Certainly NOT dots and glasses!”

“At least have a look before you decide.”

But it fell on deaf ears!

Besides, she was bound to be at the party… probably dressed in an exotic outfit, with an equally exotic-looking guy on her arm!

We arrived at the venue. I scanned the thronging crowds… familiar faces passed in a blur… my eyes zoomed in on a couple at the far end of the room…

Like a deer caught in the glare of oncoming headlights, I registered shock, for a few milliseconds, then regained my composure.

Deep breath.

Broad smile.

False bravado.

A memory surfaced… she could make you feel silly and insignificant, without saying or doing anything.

It was all in the posture… the body language… and the killer legs! They were to-die-for… long, smooth, shapely.

I faced her. Did a double-take.

Here was the envy of the 40-odd girls from our grade eleven year, the popular and charismatic three-time Miss Lucky Legs winner, standing arm-in-arm with persona non grata, the reclusive, short and squat library monitor. He was beaming from ear to ear, dressed in a polka dot shirt!

Nothing wrong at all. They can actually be quite funky, depending on the print!

    Polka dots can work.

Great piece. I loved the ending.

    • michelle on April 7, 2012 at 11:14 pm

They can work! I agree 100%. The character formed a not-so-good pre-conception of the ensemble… and lost out in the end!

  10. Sarah Pearson on April 6, 2012 at 7:59 pm

    Yes! The perfect ending 🙂

    • michelle on April 7, 2012 at 11:14 pm

      Awww… thanks.

Ah, Michelle, You are a creative machine! Such great words, and stories to match. I can't get past "D."
It also "helped" that my keyboard went out for almost two days and I'm playing catch-up. Wah, wah, wah. Poor me. A quick kick in the pants and I'm gonna forge ahead. See you again soon.

    • michelle on April 7, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Come on, Ms.Pat…. I know you can do it! 🙂 🙂

Thank you for the wonderful comment… though I'm not so sure about the "creative machine" bit… I try… but thanks for the vote of confidence!

Well, let's hear it for the library monitor!
Stopping in from the A to Z Challenge and joining your site. Great to meet you.

    • michelle on April 7, 2012 at 11:18 pm

Yep… one big round of applause for the library monitor! He is the man-of-the-moment! Great to meet you too!

I loved my polkas though they are better in smaller patterns and softer shades. Love this story. Ah…even nerdy boys fall for long legs, no wonder, we nerdy girls were never spared a look.

    • michelle on April 7, 2012 at 11:19 pm

Mmmm, makes sense, doesn't it? And my hubby always says I am short (though I don't really agree…)

  14. Mina B. on April 7, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Loved it.  Wonderfully descriptive! Great job and with a twist too! 🙂

    • michelle on April 7, 2012 at 11:20 pm

      Thanks Mina! 🙂
