Five Sentence Fiction #13 – BLUSH

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week the hostess will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

He cut a dashing and debonair figure from another world, imposing in all his finery, and definitely way out of her league.

To introvert Sarah Johnson, he was her dream date; to the remaining two hundred odd young ladies of Brettonwood College, he was Mark Mayweather II, the most admired and sought after young man on campus.

But she knew that she would never hear from him again, not after she fled the scene of the debacle, the annual Brettonwood Charity Fundraiser, which catapulted the obscure and accident-prone Sarah into the limelight, as the latest Facebook sensation.

She should never have accepted the challenge...

The note arrived on cream embossed paper, accompanied by a single pink rose, and she could feel the warmth as it crept up and into her face: "Dearest Sarah, the art of modesty has never been more appealing… and has taken on a whole new meaning... "

So the note was from him? And it was a good thing?

  2. michelle on August 28, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Yep, something along those lines… perhaps I should have explained more about the calm & admirable manner in which she handled the debacle, before she fled…

Loved this Michelle. It was clear to me the note was from him. Very swoon worthy… (:

Swoon worthy… *chuckles* Now there’s an interesting word… and it suits the dashing Mr Mayweather! 🙂

The mishap was not as bad as our Sarah made it out to be…

  6. Carol Kilgore on August 29, 2012 at 1:54 pm

    I like this a lot!

    • michelle on August 29, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Thanks Carol. This prompt had me stumped… I didn’t know what to do until the last moment when it seemed to come together.

Oh, this would make a great long story. I love Sarah's reactions.  Nothing is ever as bad as we make it out to be in our minds.  Nicely done. 🙂

    • michelle on August 29, 2012 at 6:49 pm

Perception… perception… that's what it boils down to. 🙂 Thanks CC.

This is great. It realy made me wonder what she did to get all embarrassed about…
    Fun post! 🙂

    • michelle on August 29, 2012 at 8:06 pm

Thanks Lexa! 🙂 I'm not exactly certain what she did, but she is very accident-prone…

  11. Emily R. King on August 29, 2012 at 7:40 pm

I'd love to know what she did!

    • michelle on August 29, 2012 at 8:09 pm

      Clumsiness + shyness = ?. Quite a few scenarios come to mind…

  12. The Golden Eagle on August 29, 2012 at 8:07 pm

Sarah sounds like me; introverted, shy, and liable to do something embarrassing!

  13. michelle on August 29, 2012 at 8:13 pm

I can identify too, Golden Eagle! As a child, I was "painfully" shy and introverted. I didn't speak much! I've come a long way…  but I'm still basically shy and don't like to talk much about myself… 🙂

Great piece. I also like the contrast between Facebook and note-writing, which he chose to do.

    • michelle on August 30, 2012 at 5:27 pm

He chose the "old-fashioned" means of communication, as opposed to the modern social networking… mmm… quite different for someone his age…

  16. Jen on August 30, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Hi Michelle,
First of all, thanks for stopping by my blog the other day! I appreciate it :). This is really interesting. I admire anyone who can pack a whallop in just a few sentences. The debacle at the fundraiser sounds intriguing. I'd love to know more!
    Cheers,
    Jen

Thanks for popping in, Jen. 🙂

  17. Leslie Rose on August 31, 2012 at 1:39 am

I had a little mini anxiety attack for Sarah.

    • michelle on August 31, 2012 at 11:46 am

I know what you mean….. she experienced it on a larger scale….

  18. Susan Kane on August 31, 2012 at 9:36 pm

What in the world did Sarah do that put her in the limelight of embarrassment??

  19. Jocelyn Rish on August 31, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Lots of intrigue here – definitely one I could see being expanded into a longer piece!
