MOVIE GENRE – DRAMA

I'm not much of a movie person, but I'm definitely drawn more to drama, and the following memorable quotes highlight two dramatic moments from my favourite movie!

QUOTE 1

RED: Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.
1967 PAROLE HEARINGS MAN: Well, it means that you're ready to rejoin society…
RED: I know what *you* think it means, sonny. To me it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did?
1967 PAROLE HEARINGS MAN: Well, are you?
RED: There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.

QUOTE 2

RED: [narrating] I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.

                                         MUSIC GENRE – JAZZ

I love jazz, in its many different forms/styles as performed by a wide range of artists, from legends such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan up until the present day singers/musicians. Some of the different styles are Free Jazz, Soul Jazz, Funk Jazz, Fusion, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Acid Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Cool Jazz.

A few jazz quotes…

1. Jazz is… An open-ended music designed for open minds.

— Author Unknown

2. If Charlie Parker were alive today, somebody would try to cut a disco single with and try and get him to sell three million.

— Ben Sidran

3. Anyone can learn what Louis Armstrong knows about music in a few weeks. Nobody could learn to play like him in a thousand years.

— Benny Green

                    BOOK GENRE – SUSPENSE/THRILLER

I love the SUSPENSE/THRILLER genre, the roller-coaster ride of ups and downs, of hairpin turns, death drop manoeuvres, slowing down and speeding up, where your heart pounds, your palms sweat and your body tenses. It includes the thrill of getting more than you bargained for, of being part of that "inner circle" and being privy to information that nobody else is supposed to know; and just when you think that the plot cannot possibly take one more twist, it throws yet another spanner into the works and the carefully constructed plans start to unravel. The protagonist is challenged by super-powerful enemies, and finds more and more obstacles in his way. Your eyes are riveted to the page as you are sucked into this exciting, danger-filled place. There are many types of thrillers such as the techno-thriller, medical thriller, political thriller, crime thriller and legal thriller.

                                          GUILTY PLEASURE??

I'm not sure if this counts… but I do feel guilty about it… I've discovered, as a "self-professed non-movie person", that I'm more inclined to watch kiddies animated movies than any other type of movie. I've watched Madagascar, Open Season, Ice Age, Barnyard, The Ant Bully, Garfield, Flushed Away, Alvin & The Chipmunks, Happy Feet and a few more which slipped my mind… 🙂

I'd like to thank Sherry Ellis from Mama Diaries for bestowing the "Very Inspiring Blogger" award to me.

So here are 7 pieces of trivia about me…

1. I cannot ride a bicycle and fear that I may not be able to balance…

2. When I was younger, I wanted to wear a nose ring (a small stud), but changed my mind because I suffered with hay-fever and terrible bouts of sneezing at that time. I seem to have "outgrown" the sneezing and I've lost interest in the nose-piercing idea…

3. When I am very ill, I opt for an injection in place of antibiotics. I cannot stand the thought of popping pills. They actually make you feel worse…

4. My favourite colour response: I'm a multi-coloured, rainbow nation child…

5. I can sew and crochet (from patterns too), and am interested in learning mosaic and beadwork… but there's just NO time…

6. In the mid-90's I was part of a band that won the provincial heat of a show called "The Shell Road To Fame" (sponsored by the Shell Company at that time…) and we appeared on national TV.

7. I am useless with plants… I once "killed" a cactus… now, how difficult is that? Very difficult. So that tells you. My husband never lets me forget that… LOL

                              *          *          *          *          *

So there you have it. Some tidbits of information about moi. I know of so many wonderful and inspiring bloggers, and most of them have already received this award on numerous occasions. So at this stage, I'm not going to pass this award on to any people. And now I'm off to check out some blogfest entries… HAPPY BLOG-HOPPING!

Jazz is good for unwinding & chillaxing!

  2. Mildred Holmes on September 17, 2012 at 9:56 pm

Shawshank Redemption. Took me three tries to watch that movie. The kids would watch it whilst I had other things to do and couldn't sit through it. Ice Age was funny.
All the blogs I've read today have jogged some memories. Didn't think I'd remember a quote without having to look it up.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:27 pm

It's one of the few movies that really captured my attention! The kiddies animated movies are really something else… makes me wonder who appreciates them more – kids or adults?

  3. Gina on September 17, 2012 at 9:59 pm

This is really interesting! I liked the facts that you gave about yourself.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:29 pm

      Thanks Gina!

  4. The Golden Eagle on September 17, 2012 at 10:12 pm

I love listening to jazz music, too. It can be so much fun.

    Congratulations on the award!

I've never learned to ride a bicycle, either. I want to, but the idea of crashing scares me a bit.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:30 pm

…and I thought I was the only person in the world to feel this way! Thanks G.E.

  5. Alex J. Cavanaugh on September 17, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Hey, if you enjoy the kid's movies, that's what matters.
I classify Preston and Child as thriller writers – have you read any of their books? Lean a bit towards the horror.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Never heard of them Alex. I'll be sure to check them out!

  6. Tonja on September 18, 2012 at 1:43 am

Love the movie quote. My guilty pleasure is watching that movie and too many others over and over and over again. I should be writing instead. Despicable Me is my favorite kid movie. My little guy is currently into Thomas the Train Engine. We have about 12 DVDs. I know the names of all the trains and their distinct personalities. Awesome.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:33 pm

It's such fun to watch these movies with the little ones…. you see things through a fresh set of eyes…

  7. Damyanti on September 18, 2012 at 7:26 am

Thrilled to meet another jazz fan 🙂

I'm certain I will LOVE your thriller TTT! Unfortunately, it's not on youtube. 🙁

  9. PK Hrezo on September 18, 2012 at 1:09 pm

*high-five to a sister from another mister* 😉
    We'd get along just fine.

Yes, we definitely would! 🙂 * Virtual high-5*

  10. Rose on September 18, 2012 at 2:33 pm

You know, I prefer kid movies too! I'm forced to watch them because I have kids, but I often enjoy them more than adult movies with weak plots, overdone effects, and sappy romance stories.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Kids animated movies are such a feel-good batch of stories!

  11. Emily R. King on September 18, 2012 at 3:01 pm

I watch a lot of children's films as well. The Pixar ones are my favorites. Dreamworks puts out some great ones, too. I still love Shrek. 🙂

    Congrats on your award!

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:38 pm

      Shrek is awesome… priceless! 🙂

  12. Tyrean on September 18, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies! Great Quotes!!! Congrats on your award!

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:39 pm

it's an excellent drama – pity it didn't win an Oscar. 🙁

  13. mary aalgaard on September 18, 2012 at 6:40 pm

Great responses. I'm in agreement with you on most of it. I think with the kids' movies that they are so well done. They use the most talented voices in the business, have great music – like a broadway musical, really, and spend years making it a quality artform. That's why I like them. I like it when the kids watch one of those in the van. They're great to listen to.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:41 pm

You're so right about the quality of these movies… and the actors/actresses voices always seem to be perfectly matched with the cartoon character! 🙂

  14. Clarissa Draper on September 19, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Cool about you being in a band. Do you have the footage on YouTube anywhere? That would be cool to see. I'm a fan of Thrillers as well.

    • michelle on September 19, 2012 at 2:42 pm

No, there's no Youtube footage. I do remember somebody taping it from the TV footage… I'm not sure that I'd be able to track it down… 🙁

  15. Sabrina A. Fish on September 19, 2012 at 6:32 pm

I could hear Morgan Freeman's voice as I read your quotes from Shashank Redemption. Man, that was a good movie! I love movies that make you think like that! Great post!

    • michelle on September 20, 2012 at 11:55 am

Yes, Morgan Freeman was the perfect voice for the running narrative… rich and compelling… pity the movie didn't win an Oscar 🙁 Thanks Sabrina!

  16. Jocelyn Rish on September 19, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Aniimated kids movies are awesome, and I hope I never get too old to enjoy them!

    • michelle on September 20, 2012 at 11:59 am

They are!! I think that age is only a number… it's your spirit that counts… and it would be cool if more adults tried to "tap into" that inner child that's inside all of us… 🙂

  17. Elise Fallson on September 19, 2012 at 9:27 pm

I don't listen to enough Jazz. I used to in in college. We'd go out to a coffee shop downtown with some friends and listen to young jazz preformers… it was great.
And I like watching animated movies and cartoons too! (:

    • Elise Fallson on September 19, 2012 at 9:30 pm

and I love the 7 trivia questions. LOL over the cactus! And my mom can sew and crochet and I wish I could take the time to learn it from her.

      • michelle on September 20, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Jazz is good relaxing music… very therapeutic… 🙂 Well, since you are very young, you probably still have time to learn some of these crafts…

  18. murees on September 20, 2012 at 5:59 am

Thriller is just great. Congratulations on the award! I loved learning 7 new fact about you, that was just awesome.

    • michelle on September 20, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Thrillers are nail-biting, fast-paced, on the edge stories… LOVE them!! Thanks Murees.

  19. Julie on September 20, 2012 at 9:59 am

Shawshank Redemption is a great movie! I'm impressed that you were in a band that was good enough to be on TV! Are you familiar with Sugarman? Some South African friends were raving about him. Loved your five sentence fiction piece! It's amazing how you always make each sentence come to life!

    • michelle on September 20, 2012 at 12:08 pm

I'm gonna find out more about Sugarman… 🙂 And you know how I love my flash fiction! I just hope that it works in my favour when I get down to a WIP, where hundreds of words are needed to make the story come to life (as opposed to 5 sentences… LOL)

      • Julie on September 23, 2012 at 8:14 am

I just found out that the singer's name is Rodriguez who performed the song Sugar Man. You were probably too young to remember him.

  20. Medeia Sharif on September 20, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Plants die on me. I've given up on them.

I'm not a bicycle person either.

It was great learning more about you with the blogfest and award.

    • michelle on September 22, 2012 at 2:23 pm

That makes two of us… I stay away from plants! Ditto the bicycle issue… 🙂

  21. Sherry Ellis on September 22, 2012 at 3:05 am

I enjoy listening to jazz, too. (But classical is my favorite.)

    • michelle on September 22, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Two great musical genres, for sure… 🙂

  22. Tamara on September 22, 2012 at 6:17 am

Love the movie quote. I recognized it right away. Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorites too. 🙂 I actuallly listed animated movies (mostly of the Disney variety) as my favorite genre. 🙂
And I, personally, do not think it's that hard to kill a cactus. I once killed an entire terranium of them. hehe. My husband still teases me too…
Anyway, I'm just having fun still making my way through the blog-hop. I'm a new follower. Hi and nice to meet you!

    • michelle on September 22, 2012 at 2:26 pm

Nice to meet you too, fellow cactus-killer LOL. 🙂 And here I thought I had to be THE ONLY PERSON on earth who destroyed a cactus… enjoy the rest of the blog-hop! 🙂

  23. Shannon Lawrence on September 22, 2012 at 6:58 am

There's no shame in animated movies! I watched them even when I didn't have kids.
My Genre Favorites & Guilty Pleasures

    • michelle on September 22, 2012 at 2:28 pm

The shame part lies in the fact that I regard myself as a non-movie-person… I don't know much about movies, in general, don't really go to the movie-theatre… and don't really watch them on TV either… 🙂

  24. Carolyn Brown on September 22, 2012 at 7:20 am

Kids movies are always fun to watch!

    • michelle on September 22, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Yes… love the visuals and the way the actors voices are always perfectly matched to the animals/characters!

  25. Jemi Fraser on September 22, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I love jazz too! I often play it in the background of my classroom – kids learn to enjoy it too although it throws them off a bit the first few times I play it 🙂
Love good animated movies too – you're not alone!

    • michelle on September 22, 2012 at 2:31 pm

You play it in the classroom? What grade kids are you talking about? I actually want to try out a recording of different music genres in one of my music appreciation lessons (maybe with grade 6's) 🙂

  26. Ciara Knight on September 25, 2012 at 10:38 am

I watch mystery/thrillers, but I don't really read them. I have a friend who I keep meaning to read his book, The Wilco Project. It is suppose to be great. I hope to get to it soon. Reading is my favorite, but I do enjoy a good movie.

    • michelle on September 25, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Reading is my favourite too! I haven't heard of The Wilco Project… if it's a mystery/thriller, then I'd be very interested in reading it! Thanks for popping in, Ciara! 🙂

  27. Nas on September 30, 2012 at 9:38 pm

It was lovely reading about all your favorites! Thanks for sharing.
