G is for GEWGAWS

Greetings! Gadzooks! It's G-Day! Did I hear gasping, gulping and gnashing of teeth? Get a grip, get a grip! Good grief got a gazillion blogs to get to! Grab some grub. Got to gobble and go! Goodbye!

The PinYin A to Z Project

Yóu xì bî mò fãn yì fei huà……..

— is an old Chinese philosophy which refers to somebody who has the innate ability to decipher unusual words.

JUST JOKING.

(you can read the details about this challenge and the competition running throughout the month of April)

The word for Day 7 is—-

                                         GEWGAWS

This is that special baby language – the goo-goo-goo gaa-gaa-gaa da-da-da ta-ta-ta language… those first sounds produced by babies who are learning to speak.

It's like a guffaw but without the humor?

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 12:48 pm

I'm imagining a dry, expressionless attempt at laughter…? As in "dead pan" face but heaving body…

  2. J.L. Campbell on April 8, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Gewgaws – extra stuff that we don't know what to do with.

    • Misha on April 8, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Yeah I think this one is actually right. 😛

      • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 12:49 pm

I'm inclined to agree with you ladies… 🙂

  3. Kim Van Sickler on April 8, 2013 at 1:27 pm

You know when candy sits around for awhile and gets kind of stale, bland, and overly chewy? Gee gaws. They especially pile up after Halloween and Easter.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 12:52 pm

Aha! So that's the cause of an increase in TMJ disorder after the Halloween and Easter festivities… those inedible gewgaws…!

  4. mary aalgaard on April 8, 2013 at 1:28 pm

When a student is playing a song on the piano, that they didn't practice all that much, and they keep backtracking to hit the correct notes. plink, plink, gewgaw, plink, plooonk (that was a whole note).

    Cheers!

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 12:54 pm

Lots of my beginners suffer with the piano-gewgaw-syndrome… they're always plinking and plonking along! I love your whole note sound! *chuckles*

  5. L. Diane Wolfe on April 8, 2013 at 1:53 pm

When a cat's dew claw gets all gummy, it has gewgaws.

  6. C. Lee McKenzie on April 8, 2013 at 1:55 pm

Actually, this is the sound  a rare and almost extinct subterranean moth (cave dweller and distant relation to the common fruit bat) makes when under sever stress. Writers recognize this sound because it's quite similar to the ones they make when they receive a rejection or a bad review. I'm shocked others haven't defined gewgaws accurately.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 12:58 pm

You've nailed it! It's the inarticulate sounds the rejectee makes when in shock, after the negative feedback! Some are still in shock… delayed shock… hence the failure to define the word accurately! 🙂

Gewgaws are malleable beads used by jewelry makers. They heat them and then mold them into different shapes to suit the design.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:00 pm

Mmm… is this true…? And you're sticking to your answer…?

  8. Al Diaz on April 8, 2013 at 2:08 pm

Gewgaws means bring the Angry Birds and lets throw them at anyone who enters the room. The guffaw is certain.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:00 pm

I'd like to throw some Angry Birds at the spammers….

  9. Alex J. Cavanaugh on April 8, 2013 at 2:10 pm

A really bad name for a line of clothing.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:07 pm

It sounds kinda catchy… and cute… so maybe it could work as a baby brand of clothes… gew gew gew, gaw gaw gaw…

This reminds me of the old Police song Doo Doo Doo De Da Da Da – I'm singing it in my head with this crazy G word now.

  11. jess on April 8, 2013 at 3:43 pm

Actualy… pet names for my grandparents. 🙂 All four of them.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:09 pm

      It has a "grandparently appeal"… like a term of endearment! 🙂  Gewgaw 1,2,3,& 4…aaaah, so cute…!!

  12. commonweeder on April 8, 2013 at 4:09 pm

Golly gee. You outdid me! I'm going to have rethink further posts.

  13. Mina B. on April 8, 2013 at 4:39 pm

    Here's mine:

GewGaw:  A term used for a really hot guy.

In a sentence:  "GewGaw! Did you see him?"

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:11 pm

Like when you are speechless cos he takes your breathe away…? I love your logic!

  14. PK Hrezo on April 8, 2013 at 4:55 pm

I love this word–it means trinkets right? Baubles and such? But I like your definition better. 🙂

  15. Elise Fallson on April 8, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Sounds like a type of chewing gum. (:

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:13 pm

Watch out, it's probably the kind that's responsible for TMJ disorder!

  16. Ida Chiavaro on April 8, 2013 at 8:09 pm

A specially designed seesaw that hangs from gutters.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:14 pm

Ah! The makeshift kind that you build as kids, when you cannot afford the real thing…

  17. Nick Wilford on April 8, 2013 at 10:32 pm

It is a synonym for a gentleman's "family jewels" used in certain quarters of East London.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:20 pm

I love this one! Are we talking the socio-economically disadvantaged or the affluent? I'm trying to pinpoint the correct accent/body language/mannerisms that would be used. LOL

  18. Medeia Sharif on April 8, 2013 at 11:54 pm

Your definiton is so much cuter than the official one.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:21 pm

Anything linked to babies is a winner! Thanks Medeia!

  19. DL Hammons on April 9, 2013 at 12:17 am

    Cajun french fries! 🙂

  20. Julie on April 9, 2013 at 2:17 am

Gewgaw collects around your shower drain.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:23 pm

The gooey, gummy, mouldy, yucky, smelly residue = gewgaws. Perfect definition.

  21. Clarissa Draper on April 9, 2013 at 3:03 am

Gew gaws! Have no idea what it means but it's going to be my new expression.

  22. Sam on April 9, 2013 at 3:47 am

Sounds like a bunch of shiny Star Trek paraphernalia that collects dust in my Dad's office:)  No offense to trekkies, of course *crosses self with Spock's peace sign*

    Cheers!

Gewgaws is that state you get into after having stuffed yourself so much, you sit back in a chair, stare off into space and an unintelligible sound escapes from your throught, gooogooo or gaaagaaa, before you excuse yourself to lie stomach down on the softest, most malleable sofa you've got.

    • Michelle Wallace on April 9, 2013 at 1:33 pm

There is a correlation with my definition… you become inarticulate… just babble on… like gibberish… 🙂

  24. shell flower on April 9, 2013 at 12:34 pm

Great sentences today. You really captured the Monday vibe! Gewgaws are all those gadgets on the toolbelts of steampunk ladies of the evening.
