J is for JINGLE

Welcome to Day 10 of the Third Annual A to Z Challenge!

My theme my 26 fiction posts will revolve around something musical – it could be anything, as long as it's musically-related… maybe a song title, an artist/band, musical terminology, musical instruments, words relating to sound/rhythm/movement/dance etc.

MUSICAL ASSOCIATION/CONNECTION. JINGLE – a short tune used in advertising and for other commercial uses; it contains one or more hooks and lyrics that explicitly promote the product being advertised, usually through the use of one or more advertising slogans.

When you’re single, your pockets will jingle – and you’re free to mingle!

Mmmmph! A confirmed bachelor for 33 years and Humphrey had yet to hear the sound of anything remotely close to coins, jingling in his pockets.

I suppose he should have been concentrating on the notes. But, his mother always told him to “look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of itself”.

She was a wise woman, his mother… She had raised three healthy children and ensured that all three had received a decent education. And they were practical, level-headed children… knew all about saving for a rainy day…

So why were his pockets mostly empty? It’s not that he was lazy, or anything… On the contrary, he was a hardworking and well-respected figure in the legal fraternity. He had earned the title of "up-and-coming-legal-eagle", a phrase which had stuck with him and was synonymous with his sharp eye that could pinpoint a significant detail a mile off. In his trademark grey suit, complete with briefcase and a pair of pince-nez on the bridge of his nose, he cut quite a dashing figure!

So why wasn’t he mingling… well, he was… sort of… but not as much as he ought to be! Maybe he was frequenting the wrong spots…

A Friday regular at the local pub where all the juniors met over a pint, to indulge in “shop-talk” and partake in a heated legalese debate, he was tired of the same-old, same-old… he needed a change.

So on the day that he was invited by one of the senior partners, to a weekend getaway at an out-of-town casino, he jumped at the opportunity to get away from his hum-drum weekend existence.

When he succumbed to the charms of a red-headed siren, perched at the end of the black-jack table on the gaming floor, he knew that his luck would change.

In for a penny, in for a pound… little did he know that popular saying would take on a whole new meaning for him!

Another cliff hanger ending! *shakes fist at you*  Haven't read the term pince-nez in a while – nice!

Sorreeeeeee…. 🙁 I thought that pince-nez would add something unique to his character….

I'm eager to see how this goes for Humphrey but I must tell you I saw the image and immediately the old Coca cola Jingle "I'd like to teach the world to sing.." went off in my head.

I know that jingle – it's a real feel-good song! Now it's gonna be ringing in my head for the rest of the day.

Isn't that the general idea, Ms.Pat? The cliff-hanger approach works every time!

Once again, I can picture exactly who Humphrey is and what he looks like, and once again, I really feel for him, and can only imagine the scary ride he is in for.

Poor Humprey, some people don't have the luck, nbetter off saving the pennies watching the pounds. Reminds me of me except the nice career part. Imaginative and a tad naughty.
