The envelope was empty. A pencil nestled underneath, whittled down to a mere stump, the lead shavings spread across the chipped, battered surface of the desk like scattered fragments of an elusive dream that once burned fierce and bright, now reduced to nothingness.

They discovered the scratched report card… clutched in his cold, lifeless hands.

      It's neither a school nor a life report card…  ðŸ™‚

Enjoyed this and I will agree that it was quite sad. I don't know what you meant the reader to see or feel, but as I read it, I saw a team of excavators digging through old ruins and finding, at the end of their journey, a young man sitting at his desk; his report card in one hand and in the other a pencil so used that practically nothing was left of it. It could be that there was something on that report card that someone; a parent, a friend, a sibling be ashamed of, so he sat there writing something that he was sure would please them and therefore bring him redemption, but he never finished it.
I could say that that's alot like life; we do things we know others won't approve of, even if they're not bad, and we try our utmost to better ourselves for them not realizing that the only person we have to really measure up to is ourselves.
Wow, this brought a lot of pictures, emotions and deep thoughts to my mind. LOL!! I loved it by the way and I think you did an awesome job in. Be blessed.
