L is for LULLABY
Welcome to Day 12 of the Third Annual A to Z Challenge!
My theme – my 26 fiction posts will revolve around something musical – it could be anything, as long as it's musically-related… maybe a song title, an artist/band, musical terminology, musical instruments, words relating to sound/rhythm/movement/dance etc.
MUSICAL ASSOCIATION/CONNECTION. LULLABY – a soothing song, usually sung to young children before they go to sleep, with the intention of speeding that process; as a result they are often simple and repetitive.
Hush little baby, don’t you cry, mama’s gonna sing you a lullaby…
… I’ve heard this sweet melody countless times… over the years… from generation to generation… hush little baby don’t you cry…
Perched in the corner of the sitting room, proud and resplendent in all my almost-antiquated glory, as the infamous imbuia family couch, I’m without a doubt, the only piece of furniture that will most probably outlive them all.
Old, dependable, tried and tested, a stalwart who has endured the glories, triumphs, trials and tribulations of many generations; and still I soldier on…
Etched into my wooden frame are the battle scars from being dragged, pushed, pulled and banged. My upholstery boasts an assortment of stains: ink blotches, alcohol and food stains ; a poignant testament to student living , family gatherings and untold revellery of a bygone era.
Ah… I could tell you stories… make you laugh… make you cry… but that’s for another time…
There's just one thing – the lullaby moments are the most precious of them all…

GENRE: FICTION
What a fun theme for the A-Z Challenge! Lullabies must be hard to write…they have to be soothing and sweet. Great job!
Thanks Sarah! 🙂
Trying to picture what an imbuia coach looks like…must google. Great idea for an AZ theme!
Imbuia is a type of wood… so it's a wooden couch with upholstered cushions. Thanks Melodie.
A lullaby is the most soothing song…well written.
I used your prompt for L, so that's a story dedicated to you 🙂
Look forward to the rest of your challenge run…can’t believe we’ve had 14 days already!

I will check it out later, Damy. Thanks for the dedication. 🙂
What a touching post. I sing lullabies to my children sometimes and it always has a calming effect. The lullaby Rock-a-bye baby on the treetops, has a beautiful melody, but I dislike the lyrics so much that I changed them for my children.
Now that you mention it, the rock-a-bye baby lyrics are a little disturbing… I wonder what went through that person's mind when writing those lyrics?
I love your theme! Beautiful writing… You made that couch come alive!
Ah, thank you so much – I appreciate the kind comment!
I've often wondered myself of what the furniture remembers…much like the walls. If this sofa could talk!

Great idea for a dramatic piece… little sketch/skit… something you could write and perform… even monologue could work here…
Love the perspective of the rocking chair.
Well, where I come from, the family couch fulfills numerous functions, including eating, sleeping, homework, and rocking a baby to sleep…
Mmmm, lullaby memories are some of the best memories of all, whether one is the luller or the lullee. Thank you!
Luller or lullee *chuckles*… that's quite original!
