N is for NOCTURNE

Welcome to Day 14 of the Third Annual A to Z Challenge!

My theme my 26 fiction posts will revolve around something musical – it could be anything, as long as it's musically-related… maybe a song title, an artist/band, musical terminology, musical instruments, words relating to sound/rhythm/movement/dance etc.

MUSICAL ASSOCIATION/CONNECTION. NOCTURNE – is usually a musical composition that is inspired by, or evocative of, the night.

She slipped into the alley. A solitary figure, with an ethereal, other-worldly quality, as she made her way, hesitant and cautious, enveloped by a cloak of darkness which preserved her anonymity.

Nightshade. That was her “editorial title”. The name that the public had deemed necessary to bestow upon her.

Nightshade. She was as fleeting and elusive as an alpha-stage dream within a sleep cycle. Now you see her, now you don’t.

Nightshade. She was designed for the night and marched to the tune of her own design.

Nightshade. Influenced by music of the night… she closed her eyes and surrendered to her darkest dreams… as the music caressed her… softly, deftly…

And as the last remnants of night disappeared, the nocturne grew fainter and fainter, the phantom slipped away, out of sight back into her nether world

OoHhHhh I love that idea. I did not know about  "Nocturne" as part of music. The word has always attracted me because of its poetic sound. Now it will mean a bit more to me, and inspire further writing about a Nocturnal Angel…. I love it!

I look forward to reading all about your Nocturnal Angel… sounds mysterious…

Your writing is so lyrical, which is a perfect match for your musical theme.  And even after all my years of piano lessions, I also didin't know that nocturne meant music inspired by the night.  How cool!  And now I feel smarter!  🙂

    • michelle on April 19, 2012 at 6:53 am

And here's an extra tidbit of smartness for you – nocturne is derived from the French which meant nocturnal – historically, it is a very old term, first applied to pieces in the 18th C.  🙂

You know I like your writing style a lot, and this is another example why.
And this sentense in particular struck me, I love it!  "Nightshade. She was designed for the night and marched to the tune of her own design. "

Oh loving this one. She sounds like the perfect creature of the night, and I can only imagine what
her nether world is all about.

I never knew what Nocturne was until now, thanks for the knowledge! I like your writing, it's almost rhyming…(I'd end in rhyme but I'm rubbish) off to check out your other posts now 🙂

Another beautiful piece, the makings of a fantasy or paranormal tale…her leaving evokes a strange sadness in the heart.

    • michelle on April 19, 2012 at 7:07 am

Fantasy or paranormal? I wonder if I'd be able to pull off that kind of writing? A snippet is okay, but a longer story…?

  14. Stephanie on April 20, 2012 at 11:52 am

Ooooh…I'm definitely intrigued.  Wish this one were a bit longer!

    • michelle on April 20, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Ethereal and beautifullly construed.  A fleeting moment of poetic prose.

Ah, I like the sound of that… poetic prose! Makes me sound like a poet-slash-writer… and coming from Mr. A to Z himself… thanks for the compliment, Lee.
