Something to ponder…

First things first… I missed the "Oh, How I Miss You Blogfest". What a bummer… 🙁 Life just got in the way and I've been super-hectic ever since… so there you have it…

At this time of the year, I think the wise thing would be to schedule posts, especially bloghops/blogfests and other posts that can be planned/written in advance… as simple as that. Problem solved.

I leave you with something to think about…

                                         SENSATIONALISM OR STUPIDITY?

The human psyche is amazing, unfathomable, unbelievable, mysterious… sometimes ludicrous, crazy, whacky… Makes me think of the famous quote: If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, I know I can achieve it! It means that whatever you think you can succeed in, you can actually make it a reality! (Quite a frightening notion, when you think deeply about it; and considering all the whackos running around aimlessly out there…) But the following example of that inspirational quote, is really the "cherry on top of the cake"!

It was the end of 2010, when I read about the 49-year-old Spanish woman who claimed ownership of the sun. Yep. The same four-and-a-half-billion-year-old heavenly body that has an average surface temperature of around 6000 degrees centigrade. She registered the star at a local notary. She filed paperwork–had the documents to prove it.

Why on earth would any normal, sensible, rational human being want to own the sun? I mean, the sun, of all the things to choose from! What a selfish notion!! And greedy!! *sighs* Whatever happened to sharing? *sighs again* Where does such an idea originate from anyway? Is it a sudden brainwave? A vision? A life-long ambition? A burning desire?(pun definitely intended) *giggles*

Is the goal of ownership to generate money? Is it a publicity stunt to attract fame and (hopefully) fortune? Or is it the action of a slightly unbalanced mind? After all, it has been said that the line between sanity and insanity is a fine and fragile divide… You never know when you have crossed over to the other side…

And Madame Spaniard intended to slap a fee on every person who used the sun. It would be really hilarious, if it weren't so damn stupid! I remember reading something a few weeks after the "sun story", that a religious group claimed ownership of yoga. I wonder if they filed any papers?

(This article is a re-post from way back… at that time, after I posted it, I noticed that it generated lots of spam…)

So what do you think? Have you heard of any similar stories?

That is unbelievably stupid. But it kind of makes me think of the people who "discovered" the Americas and claimed it as theirs.

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Unbelievably stupid is an understatement!  Throughout history you will notice the pattern, whenever land has been "discovered", the indigenous inhabitants are "conveniently" ignored…

  2. J. A. Bennett on November 20, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Funny how we think we can own things like the sun. I don't think so! Silly people!

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:08 pm

For you and I, it's a crazy notion… but there are others who really believe such a thing is possible… scary! 🙂

  3. Carol Kilgore on November 20, 2012 at 3:45 pm

They're out there. And they breed. Beware!

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:09 pm

      You're so right! It's scary!

  4. Alex J. Cavanaugh on November 20, 2012 at 4:56 pm

She better wear a lot of sunblock if she visits her property.
Sorry you missed the blogfest, but things sometimes happen. No worries.

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:12 pm

Makes me wonder, during the recent crazy and non-stop raining weather we've been experiencing, wouldn't the "owner of the sun" be held accountable? That means she could be sued for poor service delivery… LOL.

  5. Morgan Shamy on November 20, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Oh my gosh… I've never heard of such craziness! Hahaha…. can't wait to tell my hubs about this…

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:15 pm

      Totally whacko! LOL.

  6. L. Diane Wolfe on November 20, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Someone claims she owns the sun? I vote stupidity.

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:16 pm

She had the documents to prove it…. I'd love to have seen these documents…

  7. Elise Fallson on November 20, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Wow. I'm surprised she actually was able to process paperwork. Crazy all over the place. Maybe I'll call ownership on oxygen and charge people for breathing.   :/

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 3:20 pm

That was cheeky!! LOL.  I also wondered about the paperwork…  She registered at a local notary, so other locals must have been part of the craziness!

  8. joylene on November 21, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Unless it was a tongue-in-cheek response to what we all take for granted. I know I sure miss the sun this time of year. Where we live a lot of people talk as if they own the lake, especially out front of their place. Nobody owns the shoreline and never will. It's free. Like air and … the sun! Haha. Silly lady, or maybe one brick short of a load.

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I don't think it was tongue-in-cheek. Your lake is amazing… no wonder the nearby residents are 'claiming' a share of its beauty… but as you say, nobody owns it. That lady is one brick short – definitely!

  9. tara tyler on November 21, 2012 at 5:24 pm

who did she file papers with, the gala tic empire?
    koo koo!
    or evil, greedy genius! ha!

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 4:55 pm

How did she manage to get away with filing papers? Ha! Some people are really shrewd and koo koo…

  10. Carolyn Brown on November 21, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Stupid, studpid woman! What the hell would she do with the sun? Expect payment from others to use it?

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 4:56 pm

Exactly! What on earth would she do with the sun? *shrugs* Beats me…

  11. Tyrean on November 21, 2012 at 8:59 pm

That's ridiculous, and kind of funny in a whoa that's weird kind of way.
I agree that pre-writing posts is the way to go at the moment . . .I've been doing that most days . . .and even marking them in the calendar section of my e-mail. Kind of crazy.

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 5:03 pm

There's just so much going on at the moment… and the blogfests/bloghops seem to be endless…  but too exciting to miss out on…

  12. Sherry Ellis on November 21, 2012 at 9:38 pm

she's definitely a nut job!  What in the world does she think she's going to do with the sun?

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Probably just looking for some publicity? Who knows…

  13. Lynda R Young on November 22, 2012 at 3:31 am

Prescheduling would require being organised and I'm not so good with that at the moment 😉
And lol at slapping a fee on everyone using the sun.

    • michelle on November 22, 2012 at 5:06 pm

What happens if you get sunburn? Could you blame her? Maybe for excessive service delivery? LOL 🙂

  14. Julie on November 22, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Maybe I could sue her for some of my skin damage. Of course it had nothing to do with laying out in our backyard with sun reflectors as a kid!  Great story!

    • michelle on November 23, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Ha! Ha! There are thousands of sunburn victims… every person who ever suffered from sunburn would have a field day… imagine the number of lawsuits?

  15. Jemi Fraser on November 22, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Some people are total stunned bunnies. Although if the solar flares do any damage to satellites or telescopes or the ISS, maybe NASA can sue her… 🙂

    • michelle on November 23, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Oh my word, I didn't even think about that… 🙂 *giggles*

  16. The Golden Eagle on November 24, 2012 at 2:36 am

I haven't heard that story before. Sad, though, that a person would try to claim something like the sun.

    • michelle on November 25, 2012 at 8:57 pm

This took place about 2 years ago…  yes, it's a sad thing, very sad….

  17. J.L. Campbell on November 24, 2012 at 3:18 am

    Michelle,
I hadn't heard about this before. Can't imagine that a sane person would try anything like that. :/

    • michelle on November 25, 2012 at 9:00 pm

I agree. It makes me wonder how many people may be teetering on the brink of insanity, or may already be over the edge… it's quite a sobering thought… 🙂

  18. Jocelyn Rish on November 25, 2012 at 2:06 am

Wow, that is a crazy story.  Your sensationalism or stupidity question makes me think of Black Friday and all the INSANITY of the after Thanksgiving sales.  I know you don't have to deal with that, but watching those crazy people on the news fighting each other for cheap towels they'd never even want any other day of the year just makes me shake my head in shame for my fellow citizens.

    • michelle on November 25, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Well, that's human nature… some of them probably just 'go with the masses'… never a dull moment, hey? I sometimes think that, quite often,  people don't really know what they want…

  19. PK Hrezo on November 25, 2012 at 9:19 am

    Hey Michelle!
THere's just no way to do all the blogfests. We have to skip some or else we'd never get any actual writing done.
Ya the bit about owning the sun is just ridiculous. Someone did the same for the moon and sold real estate as a novelty gift. I thought it was funny at the time but it never occurred to me that someone could really believe they should be the rightful owner of a celestial body that all of humanity relies on.
And I agree that the psyche is a powerful tool that is underestimated all the time. We can convince ourselves of anything, and that's as scary as it is empowering. The human brain is the ultimate weapon. WHich is why we must equally nurture the soul.
Hope you're having an awesome weekend!!

    • michelle on November 25, 2012 at 9:10 pm

Thanks PK. Yep, we cannot do all the blogfests… but there are some that you just cannot skip. The power of positive thinking…. scary and empowering at the same time!

  20. Laura Diamond on November 26, 2012 at 12:18 am

LOL! People get caught up in the sensational. It's so dazzling that we forget to look for the reality (or lack thereof) behind it.

    • michelle on November 26, 2012 at 7:35 pm

      Blinded by the hype-factor! LOL

  21. jabblog on November 26, 2012 at 6:09 pm

I know it's possible to 'buy' bits of the moon but why would anyone want to? Crackers!

    • michelle on November 26, 2012 at 7:38 pm

Well, it does take all types to make up this world… but what on earth would you do with bits of the moon?

  22. Leslie Rose on November 27, 2012 at 4:02 am

Doesn't she know it's going to blow in a couple million years? Bad investment.

  23. michelle on November 27, 2012 at 10:12 am

Yep. Risky investment. Can only run at a loss. 🙂

  24. Medeia Sharif on December 2, 2012 at 7:44 am

I somehow missed the news when it first came out. Hmmm, how about crazy-stupid?

    • michelle on December 3, 2012 at 1:17 pm

      Crazy-stupid-silly-nutty… take your pick… 🙂

  25. Nick Wilford on December 2, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Charge for use of the sun? OK, so that would basically be the entirety of life on earth, including trees. Good luck with that!

    • michelle on December 3, 2012 at 1:19 pm

…and I wonder how far luck will get her in her quest to monopolise the sun… ?
