Shelfie Bloghop, Whacky Words & Afri-Scape

IMG_0186.JPGI’m back…and feeling much better than I did last week. Thanks to all those who popped in to send well wishes.

I just managed to sneak in for the Shelfie hop. I assembled some books at the last minute, and there’s my piano mug on the side. TA-DA!

It’s time for WHACKY WORDS! Remember, this is supposed to be FUN!

Thank you to everybody who played along for the previous word. The real meaning of the word Expergefaction is – an awakening. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/expergefaction (I wonder – can you call your alarm clock an expergefactor? I suppose it fits, especially when the dreaded contraption goes off at an unearthly hour and the significant ‘factor’ that comes in to play is – you’re tempted to ‘purge’ it…LOL)

The definition that caught my imagination was posted by – TOI THOMAS. She defined it as: a militant group who disposes of old and unwanted acquaintances. I’m wondering about the disposal techniques that they use…the mind can run riot on this one…Congrats Toi. I’ll contact you shortly.

Today’s word is

                                               FROTTAGE

It’s the rot and decay, the heaps of garbage which accumulate on an abandoned lot!

garbage pile     stinking garbage garbage dump

That’s my definition. (The word does have a meaning, but you are invited to play along by providing your own original meaning. No cheating and looking up the word. I’ll post the meaning next week). So do you wanna play along? Leave your definition in the comment section below.

                             AFRI-SCAPE

He ain't heavy, he's my brother...

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother…

Any closer, and we can almost see eye to eye...

Any closer, and we can almost see eye to eye…

Did you participate in the shelfie bloghop? Are you playing along with my whacky words? If you were an animal, what type would you be? I always imagined that I’d be a dolphin…

Look at you! Great collage of Mish fun today =)
And thanks for joining in the Shelfie Hop!

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 9:57 am

I had fun putting it together at the last minute! Thanks Tara! 🙂

  2. Alex J. Cavanaugh on October 6, 2014 at 12:56 pm

    Hey, I see my book!
Frottage – cottage cheese that’s gone bad.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:00 am

Yes, that’s yours! (Still need to get the others…)
I can smell the “rot and frot”! LOL

  3. L. Diane Wolfe on October 6, 2014 at 2:21 pm

Happy to hear you are feeling better. What a week to be sick.

  4. Gisele LeBlanc on October 6, 2014 at 2:25 pm

Oh, I have The Alchemist on my reading shelf, too! Haven’t read it yet though. And, Mao’s Last Dancer, I think they made that one into a movie–at least, I seem to remember seeing that title on Netflix. I could be wrong though.

I also LOVE elephants, and I’m glad you’re feeling better! 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:01 am

Yes, they did make Mao’s Last Dancer into a movie. 🙂 It’s a lovely story…

  5. Sammy D on October 6, 2014 at 2:42 pm

Alchemist was terrific. I am just about to start Gladwell’s Tipping Point (a tad brhind on releases!). I thought Book Thief was so-so. Either I overloaded on books with similar topics or it got too muddy for me in length.

Love your word game – first I’ve seen it!

    Glad you are feeling better.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:03 am

I have Gladwell’s Tipping Point. It’s actually better than Blink.
The Book Thief was AMAZING! The best book for me last year. :*

  6. Christine Rains on October 6, 2014 at 2:59 pm

Great Shelfie! Thanks for participating. And a new word for me. Wonder how I can fit it in…

    Frottage: a French cottage.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:04 am

Le Frottage? Sounds like it could be a cosy and intimate dwelling…

  7. Patricia Lynne on October 6, 2014 at 4:08 pm

I was going to participate in the shelfie bloghop, but never got around to it. Hopefully next time.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:04 am

I jumped in at the eleventh hour… 🙂 Next time…

  8. C. Lee McKenzie on October 6, 2014 at 5:23 pm

    I like Toi’s definition a lot better than Webster’s.

As to Frottage I thought everyone knew what that was. It’s the opposite of Tottage. You go Tootage and Frottage. More common synonyms are To and Fro.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:06 am

I love those opposites Lee – tottage and frottage! Really original! 🙂

  9. Toi Thomas on October 6, 2014 at 8:47 pm

I can’t believe I won. I guess I can be clever sometimes, but Frottage…I think I’m stumped. Maybe it’s like wattage; perhaps it’s what you measure when powering things by fruit or veggies.
    Love the elephants.
    Glad you’re feeling better.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:11 am

      Very cute answer.
Now I’m picturing brightly illuminated fruit & veggies! 🙂
Reminds me of experiments they run to determine if there is enough energy stored in fruit or veggies, to power an LED light…they’ve used potatoes to power LED lights…

  10. Carol Kilgore on October 6, 2014 at 10:29 pm

So glad you’re feeling better! I know what frottage means, so I’m not going to play this week – having trouble coming up with what it doesn’t mean LOL! Love the elephants 🙂

  11. Lexa Cain on October 6, 2014 at 10:41 pm

Frottage – A small domicile made of lilypads, inhabited by frogs. Ex: After a long day of fly-catching, Mr. Frog hippety-hopped to his frottage, glad to go inside and put his feet up by the cozy fireplace.

I love elephants! I wish they could talk. 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:16 am

      I like the ‘froggie’ perspective!
That lilypad domicile sounds kinda cute! 🙂
Imagine if elephants could talk? I wonder what’s their mindset…what would they reveal?

  12. Krystal Jane on October 6, 2014 at 10:41 pm

    Aww, elephant so happy! ^_^
Frottage: to frollick daintily in a vast field of fragrant flowers (preferably tall ones) whilst singing folk songs. “Mandy is in the backyard frottaging and breaking in her new Mary Janes.”

    Love the quickie shelfie!

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:18 am

      I love the light-hearted, alliteration-styled answer! Good one! 🙂

  13. Shell Flower on October 6, 2014 at 11:04 pm

Glad to hear you are feeling better. Frottage: a cheap rental house near a university where a bunch of 18-19 year old boys are living on their own for the first time. Usually full of beer bottles, piles of dirty clothes and gear, and bicycles with girls on party nights. Loving the elephant photos, too. I’d love to see a real elephant.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:20 am

The elephants are AMAZING close up! 🙂
That ‘student-liestyle’ definition does seem to fit! LOL

      • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:48 am

Sorry that should be ‘lifestyle’… (the F key is sticky! Aaaaargh!)

  14. Cathrina Constantine on October 7, 2014 at 1:05 am

I posted my shelfie last week. Glad to hear you’re feeling better!!

  15. Trisha on October 7, 2014 at 4:59 am

That is quite the make-shift bookshelf there. 🙂

Those elephants are amazing – can’t imagine how it feels to be so close in your car to such a magnificent creature.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:50 am

      It’s a last-minute-throw-some-books-together-and-take-a-photo shelfie. 🙂
Elephants are HUMUNGOUS! Really magnificent creatures! 🙂

  16. Heather M. Gardner on October 7, 2014 at 1:59 pm

    Yeah for SHELFIE!!!

    Nice job!

    Frottage?

    Although I like Lee’s and Lexa’s explanations, I’m going with…

Frottage: How high a frog will jump when goosed with an electric current.

    Heather

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:52 am

I LOVE your definition! It’s a classic (poor toad…now the mental image will be with me for the rest of the day…) 🙂

  17. Loni Townsend on October 7, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Your shelfie is like a mug shot! MWAHAHAHAHA!

    I love your elephant pictures.

Frottage – A wreath made of bird seed hung on the front door during summer seasons.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 10:56 am

It IS a mug shot! Rather that drinking mug than my ‘mug’…LOL

Front door wreath + bird seed + summer = frottage. It has a certain logic! Thanks for playing!

  18. Quanie Miller on October 7, 2014 at 3:26 pm

Loving that piano mug! And type of animal? Let’s see…I’m a dog lover (the smaller and feistier, the better!) so I’d have to say dog. And glad to hear that you’re feeling better.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:08 am

Small doggies are cute! Which one would you be? A corgi, chihuahua, terrier? The Jack Russell is quite bold & energetic! 🙂

  19. Anna Simpson on October 7, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Frottage — What Frodo would call a cottage if he lived in one. 🙂

    Anna from Shout with Emaginette

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:09 am

The perfect name for his dwelling…and the most logical answer! 🙂

  20. Julie K Pick on October 7, 2014 at 5:27 pm

Frottage – A group of like minded individuals who gather to discuss the latest techniques in managing uncontrollably curly hair. Glad you’re feeling better, Michelle!

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:12 am

The monthly meeting of the Curly Frottage Fraternity…mmm, I can see it!

  21. Sherry Ellis on October 7, 2014 at 5:30 pm

Glad to hear you’re feeling better!

Frottage: A cottage on the outskirts of a college campus where all sorts of fraternizing occurs, unbeknownst to campus security officers.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:17 am

These “frottaging” students are SO busted! (see Shell Flower’s response above)

  22. Elise Fallson on October 7, 2014 at 6:47 pm

Frottage, sounds like the word ‘Frotter’ in French which means to rub…. so I’m going with…. a cheese base beauty product that you rub on your skin to make you brie-tiful, uh I mean–beautiful!! 😛

Glad you’re feeling better, love your mug and your mini shelfie! 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:18 am

      I’d love a frottage treatment… sounds divine… 🙂

  23. Lynda R Young on October 8, 2014 at 5:39 am

Frottage is the ruffles men wore in the 16th century

Good to hear you are feeling better.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:23 am

Those elaborate, wide-pleated, ruffled collars? They were so stiff and starched and stood out like a wheel around the neck…the word definitely fits the image.
      Thanks for playing Lyn!

  24. Melissa Maygrove on October 8, 2014 at 2:15 pm

    Love the elephant pics.
    Glad you’re feeling better.

Frottage: Cottage cheese that’s been in the fridge too long. 😛

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:24 am

Cold cottage cheese that’s gone sour, maybe? 🙂 Imagine the smell?

  25. Crystal Collier on October 8, 2014 at 4:44 pm

LOL! I want to play along but the word makes me thing of facade, cottage and collage all in one–so I guess it’s a false front.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:28 am

Okay, so it goes like this: frottage = facade+cottage+collage = false front. Nice logic. LOL

  26. Susanne Drazic on October 8, 2014 at 7:48 pm

    Hi, Michelle. Cool shelfie!

  27. Stephanie Faris on October 9, 2014 at 1:50 am

I saw your shelfie elsewhere…Alex’s blog, maybe? Great job!!! I didn’t participate because I don’t really have a bookshelf, unless my Kindle counts!

    • Michelle Wallace on October 9, 2014 at 11:29 am

There were participants who submitted Kindle Shelfies…so you could’ve used yours. Thanks Steph! 🙂

  28. Hilary on October 9, 2014 at 5:45 pm

Hi Michelle – I’ve been away and catching your flu wasn’t on the cards! Also this place is still a mess – Shelfies nowhere near organised! Delighted to see yours and Mandela’s books .. I bought Zelda la Grange’s book and hope it will be interesting .. seemed an fascinating combination – so I’d like to read how things developed ..

Just glad you’re feeling better … and frottage … the froth on top of beer?

Love your Afriscape too … cheers Hilary

    • Michelle Wallace on October 11, 2014 at 7:56 am

I need to check out Zelda’s book…should be enlightening! 🙂
I don’t know why, but now I’m picturing a beer-drinking guy with ‘frottage’ on his bushy moustache….. LOL
      Thanks for playing along, Hilary!

  29. Denise Covey on October 10, 2014 at 2:56 am

Hi Michelle. Some of my favourite books on your shelf — The Book Thief, The Alchemist to name just two. Thanks for the African photos. Awesome.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 11, 2014 at 7:57 am

Those two books are amongst my favourite top 5!
      Really awesome reads… 🙂

  30. SittieCates on October 10, 2014 at 6:50 am

    Hi, Michelle! Loved the Afri-Scape.

Glad to know you’re feeling better.

    Ooh, books! 🙂

Your piano mug is so cool!

  31. Tyrean on October 10, 2014 at 3:38 pm

Glad you are feeling better! Love the shelfie!
And I used to imagine that I was a cheetah (as a kid). 🙂 I don’t think I can run very fast these days so that’s kind of funny at the moment.

Frottage: A cottage owned by two German brothers who like tea and gardening. (Frere and Cottage with a little extra).

    • Michelle Wallace on October 11, 2014 at 8:01 am

Very interesting German perspective on the word definition…. 🙂
The cheetah in full flight is an amazing spectacle! (always see it on Nat Geo)
      Thanks for playing along, Tyrean!

  32. Misha on October 10, 2014 at 6:24 pm

Hehehe I still remember the last time I defined this and I still maintain that frottage is rotten cheese. Origin: Afrikaans for rotten (vrot) and French for cheese (fromage). 😉

    • Michelle Wallace on October 11, 2014 at 8:03 am

      Hehehe!
And I can remember saying that: Ek hou van jou “vrot” antwoord. 🙂

  33. joylene on October 10, 2014 at 11:11 pm

It’s a French word and we all know what the French think about… food and sex. Let’s have sex, then grab some cheese and visit the cottage. Yikes, that’s bad. LOL

    • Michelle Wallace on October 11, 2014 at 8:05 am

Mmm, so getting ‘hot and heavy’ would be ‘frottaging’?
It actually seems to fit, Joylene. LOL

  34. Jemi Fraser on October 11, 2014 at 12:53 pm

Love the elephant pics! Such incredible animals. I always thought I’d be a wolf if I was an animal 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on October 13, 2014 at 9:01 am

A wolf? Interesting. Just a ‘normal’ wolf…or extending it to a werewolf? 🙂

  35. New RR Novels on October 12, 2014 at 12:43 am

I love the photos, the shelfie and the elephants!

  36. Nas on October 12, 2014 at 8:55 pm

Great shelvie! Awesome post and photos! Thanks for sharing about the books!

  37. Medeia Sharif on October 13, 2014 at 2:18 am

I looked up frottage. It sounded like cheese, but I’m wrong.

I love looking at people’s shelfies.

    I’m glad you’re feeling better.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 13, 2014 at 9:02 am

      LOL. It’s not cheese… 🙂
Thanks Medeia. And congrats again on the new book!

  38. Shannon Lawrence on October 13, 2014 at 5:19 am

Frottage: The act of being tense, showing signs of tension.

Nice elephant pics! And I like the piano mug.

    • Michelle Wallace on October 13, 2014 at 9:04 am

Tension? Mmm, sounds like it could fit!
      Thanks for playing along, Shannon!
