Whacky Words, Flash Fiction & One Good Catch

It’s time for WHACKY WORDS! Remember, this is supposed to be FUN!

Thank you to everybody who played along for the previous word. The real meaning of the word Oxyacanthous is having sharp thorns. http://phrontistery.info/o.html

The two definitions that captured my attention were posted by… Mary Pax who said: it’s a graduate from the best dinosaur uni, (so cool) and Shelly Arkon said: it’s someone who obsesses over the cellulite on their thighs (cellulite OCD lol). Congratulations ladies!

Today’s word is

                                                 PAIZOGONY

Ancient bartering system probably dating back to 15 B.C. which is the origin of the modern day buying and selling of goods/services, what we call consumerism.

That’s my definition. (The word does have a meaning, but you are invited to play along by providing your own original meaning. No cheating and looking up the word. I’ll post the meaning next week). So do you wanna play along? Leave your definition in the comment section below.

What is F-S-F all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week the hostess will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

                                                          OPEN

open_window-t2

Deafening silence permeates the emptiness.

It mirrors the desolation that weighs heavy upon the bleak landscape of my existence.

Dread seeps, a slow and painful realisation, squeezing out every remaining vestige of hope as it trudges along a path of no return…

Playful and mocking, a breeze slips through the open window and snatches the lingering scent of his spicy perfume.

A crushing finality!

It’s time to reveal another gorgeous cover… presenting… *drum roll*

                                         One Good Catch

                                 A Maguire’s Corner novel

Title: One Good Catch
Author: Heather M. Gardner
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Publisher: InkSpell Publishing
Cover Design: NajlaQamber Designs
Release Date: March 13, 2015
Ignoring a recent trauma that is affecting her everyday life, ER Doctor Kate Maguire engages in some high risk activities, but putting herself in these dangerous situations isn’t enough to feed her edginess. She needs something more. When her brother’s high school best friend comes back to town, it’s her chance for a ‘no strings attached’ fling with the man who still headlines in all her best dreams.

Rhys MacGrath’s days of one-night-stands are long over. The pro-football player might be side-lined at rehab for a shoulder injury, but that doesn’t mean he can’t admire and desire the all-grown-up, so-damn-hot, version of the tomboy he once knew. His sudden interest in Kate might be aggravating his best friend, who doesn’t approve, but it’s her indifference that’s driving Rhys crazy.

Everything heats up when Kate’s nosy nature sets her in the line of fire of an arsonist forcing them to deal with more than just the sparks igniting between them.

Heather M. Gardner’s love of books began on the hand-woven rugs of her small town library where her mother worked. There she had a never-ending supply of stories to read at her fingertips. As a teen, her favorite genres to curl up with were romance and mysteries. When she started to create her own stories, they were the perfect fit.

Heather resides in New York with her best friend who is also her husband, plus her talented and handsome son. She is currently owned by four stray cats. Heather’s a full-time mom, works part-time from home, a chocolate enthusiast, coffee junkie, cat addict, book hoarder and fluent in sarcasm.

    That’s good, Michelle.
    Congratulations to Heather.
And Paizogony – that’s a tough one. Paiz is a Central American name. So all I can think of is a game similar to Monopoly only instead of hotels it’s South American countries…

  2. Murees Dupé on February 16, 2015 at 9:16 am

Congrats to Heather, that is one good cover. Your story was very entertaining…especially about the finality of him leaving. Paizogony sounds like a very painful disease. Have a great week!

  3. Southpaw HR Sinclair on February 16, 2015 at 3:31 pm

I don’t know what it mean, but Murees is right, it sounds painful.

  4. Patricia Lynne on February 16, 2015 at 3:33 pm

Paizogony. The word sounds painful. LOL

  5. joylene on February 16, 2015 at 3:59 pm

Beautiful open poem, Michelle. Congratulations to Heather. And I think paizogony means unable to praise others without feeling total agony.

  6. Susan Gourley on February 16, 2015 at 4:07 pm

Haunting picture and sentences suited it perfectly.
Paizogony- The study of ancient Italian architecture.

  7. C. Lee McKenzie on February 16, 2015 at 4:46 pm

Your fiction gave me the shivers, Michelle. That image did, too! Well done.

As to Paizogony. . .I’m sure it has to do with food. Pies A Gone, Hey? is the modern way to write it. That’s what my family always says when the pie tin has nothing in it.

  8. Caryn Caldwell on February 16, 2015 at 7:32 pm

Hmm. PAIZOGONY. I’m going with a mix of ‘progeny’ and ‘pescado’ (‘fish’ in Spanish) and say it’s fish spawn. Or a really unappetizing way of saying “caviar.” 😀

Now I’m going to look it up and see just how wrong I was. I’ll keep the definition to myself, of course, so I don’t ruin anybody’s guesses.

  9. Heather M. Gardner on February 16, 2015 at 9:15 pm

    Wow! Your FSF was powerful!

PAIZOGONY – After I pay my bills … my paiz-o-gony. (groan)

Thank you so much for sharing the cover today!

    Heather

I like the cover of One Good Catch and, of course, your flash fiction was entertaining.
Now, as for PAIZOGONY- I’d say it’s the secret mastery of paisley making technique applied to cooking and fight. Only a few become masters able to sew, cook, and fight in the style of paisley; all others have their memories wiped.

  11. Carol Kilgore on February 18, 2015 at 12:37 am

    Heather has a great cover!

And I love your F-S-F. You do so good with these.

PAIZOGONY is a headache caused by gorging on paella.

ha Carol’s is my fav! wonderful fsf! and I love Heather’s cover!!

  13. Loni Townsend on February 18, 2015 at 4:17 pm

PAIZOGONY – The historical study of PEZ candy development.

    Grats to Heather!

PAIZOGONY: when a puzzle master completes a thousand piece puzzle, only to find one is missing.

    Huge congratulations to Heather!

  15. Crystal Collier on February 18, 2015 at 6:59 pm

Such a sad five sentences, but very poignant. Nice.

Yay for Heather! I’ve seen her book a couple times while hopping around today. It sounds awesome!

  16. Anna on February 18, 2015 at 7:53 pm

The cover is beautiful, and the blurb makes me want a copy for sure. 🙂

  17. Chrys Fey on February 18, 2015 at 11:12 pm

Gotta love those whacky words. Now how to get them into a work of fiction nowadays? Hmm… 😉

    Congrats to Heather!

  18. Christine Rains on February 18, 2015 at 11:42 pm

Yay for Heather! I love her new cover. And excellent 5 sentences this week.

PAIZOGONY: A new sexual practice inspired by the 50 Shades of Grey movie that isn’t really kinky or satisfying.

  19. Julie K Pick on February 19, 2015 at 9:39 am

Another wonderful 5 sentence fiction! Congrats to Heather!

PAIZOGONY – An Italian saying for when the patriarch of the family frequently comes and goes as he pleases without any warning. The boy shrugs his shoulders as he explains to his mama, “Pa? Pa-iz-o-gony.”

  20. Medeia Sharif on February 19, 2015 at 11:03 am

    That word sounds mathematical.

I love your piece and Heather’s cover.

  21. Sherry Ellis on February 19, 2015 at 5:49 pm

I like the cover of the book!

Paizogony: The mathematical process of figuring out how to make your paycheck last until the next one.

  22. Elizabeth Seckman on February 21, 2015 at 3:32 am

I love Heather’s cover. I want to read that book.

Let’s see, I think that word means the addiction to buying paisley socks. Yeah, that is lame. It’s late and my brain in tired 🙂

  23. Tonja on February 21, 2015 at 2:16 pm

I’ve been away for a while. I love how you’ve structured your posts. Super love the 5 sentence story – I think that would be a great morning writing warm up every morning. As for the word, it sounds like the pain you feel after you get hit by a phaizer (“phaser” actually – Star Trek).

  24. Robyn Campbell on February 21, 2015 at 6:04 pm

LOVE Open. Would love to do the five sentence fiction. SCHWEET!

Hooray for Heather! (A little alliteration there. Writing an alliterative poem. It kinda carried over to my comment.) Her book sounds fabulous. I’ve often thought about writing romance. Don’t think I’d be any good at it.

PAIZOGONY sounds like a wacky (but cool) new form of poetry where all the words in the poem have to begin with P.
Poesy Pro (my oops, an M word) Pal
    Pal, poetic playmate
    Pretty pleasing pulchritudinous
    Passionate peaceful paroxysm
    Princess phenomenal peer!

*waves peace sign* to my buddy Michelle. MISSED you.

  25. Sharon Himsl on February 21, 2015 at 8:13 pm

PAIZOGONY. The art of paying what paisley is actually worth in the open market, but sometimes confused with buying batik? Love the cover jacket, Heather’s book.

  26. Jemi Fraser on February 22, 2015 at 2:33 pm

    Love your Open!
Congrats to Heather – book sounds & looks awesome!

Paizogony – the art of creating world peace. Ghandi & Mother Teresa were incredible paizogonists
