Z is for Zibaldone

Zippidee-doo-dah Zippidee-ay, My oh my what a wonderful day, End of the challenge, Nothing to say, Zippidee-doo-dah, Zippidee-day!   ZING-BA-DA-BING!

Ever wondered what books would say if they had the chance to express themselves/air their views?

Well, you are about to find out!

But wait! What is a Zibaldone? It's a 17th century commonplace book. Commonplace books (or commonplaces) were a way to compile knowledge, usually by writing information into books. Such books were essentially scrapbooks filled with items of every kind: medical recipes, quotes, letters, poems, tables of weights and measures, proverbs, prayers, legal formulas.

And now you get to play along! What do YOU think the zibaldone wants to tell us? Post it in the comment section below. Have fun!

We've reached the end of the challenge! Thank you to all the bloggers who visited and played along! I hope you had fun!

I'm going to announce my favourite "book comment" on the 05th May, which will also be my A to Z  Reflection post.

Don't forget to hop over to the A to Z site where you can sign up for the AtoZ challenge Reflections post. The Linky List will open on 05th May.

THAT'S A WRAP! SEE YOU AGAIN FOR THE 2015 A TO Z CHALLENGE!

Book to Scrap Booker: "No. No. You've got it all wrong. Repeat after me zib-al-do-nes. And put down the paste until I tell you I'm ready." Closes cover in a huff. "Twienty-first century and they can't pronounce worth @!#!"

Well done for getting to the end! The Zibaldone reminds me of The Whole Earth Catalogue Steve Jobs mentioned in his commencement address speech. He explained it as Google before computers.

"No, no. I'm not a scrap book. Do not confuse me with this peasant relation of mine. I am the zophisticated, the zublime, the zany Zibaldone."

  5. Crystal Collier on April 30, 2014 at 4:19 pm

Wow! What a super cool new word.

"What? Victor Frankenstein? Oh yeah, he created more than just a monster from spare scraps."

Zibaldone sez, "Zee way to add zest and zing to your life iz to zealously save zillions of zis-and-zats, zen zero in on zee bitz and piecez zat you dezire when you need zem zee most!"

    (Apparently, Zibaldone is French.)

Cheers to a fun-filled theme and comical finish line!

It was great re-meeting you and congrats on finishing the challenge. Your theme was one of the more difficult – if not 'the' most difficult ones I've seen. entertaining too

    We WILL keep in touch

In more modern times they would say I belong in the "junk" drawer but all of this stuff is worth keeping. Don't hide me away …

I think the Zibaldone would say "Ask me anything. I know it all! =PPPPPPPPPP"

You have done such an amazing job at coming up with words. I haven't even heard of many of these words.

    Hey, Michelle. We finished!!! 🙂

If I were that book I'd be saying 'Enough already! I feel as if I have all the secrets of the universe between my covers.'

  18. Betty on May 1, 2014 at 12:28 am

So a Zibaldone could be sort of like a journal?

If I was that book I would say "I think I could sell her info to National Enquirer".

    Congrats on finishing the challenge!

This sounds exactly like my high school journal.  I loved it and continued to keep one well after high school.  I used it for everything – including starting my first blog  =)

To me, that word sounds like some sort of musical instrument, perhaps combined with a toblerone. hehe.

OH GOD I WANT A TOBLERONE NOW.

Thanks for stopping by my blog during the challenge – and congrats on getting through it yourself! 🙂 Happy May 1st!!

  25. Lisa Buie-Collard on May 1, 2014 at 3:11 pm

Zibaldone… what a great word! I think with all that "stuff" stuffed in to a book it would be like opening a treasure chest, and a walk down memory lane, and a lesson to be learned, and what was important to someone somewhere. Wow, what a treat to read and feast the eyes on such variety… Congrats on reaching the finish line, and, though late to find you, I did actually make it here to your blog! I'll be back!!! Thanks for finding me…

  26. Elizabeth Seckman on May 1, 2014 at 3:29 pm

Oh my goodness! I am a Zibaldone keeper, I just never knew it had a name. Ever since I was a kid, I have kept a notebook and jotted things in it and taped things into it. Sadly though, once it's filled, I usually throw it away. It's probably crying, "Why didn't you keep me?!"

  27. Shell Flower on May 1, 2014 at 3:55 pm

Congrats on finishing the A-Z.. Zibaldones sound kind of like the internet to me, only now we have zillions of scraps of information at our fingertips. I'd probably put my recipe for healing salve in one: beeswax, honey, comfrey, calendula, and yarrow.

  30. Gary on May 1, 2014 at 11:29 pm

    Hey Michelle!

The Zilbadone want to tell you and anybody else who did the A to Z, to STOP!  Time to let go of this very weird alphabet fixation.

Okay, one serious moment, Michelle.  You did well and at least you used your abundance of imagination with your theme on the challenge.  Congrats to you, dear friend.

Please, I BEG you, no mention of the alphabet challenge, 2015!  Time to go sob uncontrollably in a darkened room 🙂

Gary, the cordial co-host of The Alphabark Challenge, 2014!

  31. Teresa Cypher on May 2, 2014 at 12:48 am

Neat word! Thanks 🙂 Congrats on completeing the A to Z! 🙂

What does the zbaldones say (Yikes…now that song, what does the fox say is playing in my brain!)

Oh, back to the zbaldones: "No! No! No! How many times do I gotta tell ya. I don't belong at the Arena. I'm not for smoothing the ice skating rink.. I'm a book. A book! A BOOK! I belong with other books, not the hockey team!"

  32. Lori L MacLaughlin on May 2, 2014 at 1:52 am

"No, no, no! Zibaldone! Not Zi–bald–one. I am NOT bald!"

Congrats on making it to the end of the challenge!

  35. Tyrean on May 2, 2014 at 5:49 pm

I love the Zibaldone idea! I think my my journals come pretty close to that. I store everything in there, and I've started labeling them and giving them a TOC so I can find recipes, articles I've clipped, and story ideas. I don't have anything better than C. Lee's idea – love her comment for the Zibaldone. 🙂

  36. Medeia Sharif on May 2, 2014 at 10:21 pm

Congrats on finishing the challenge. You've introduced me to so many types of books.

  37. Nick Wilford on May 3, 2014 at 8:03 am

So Zibaldones were a 17th century equivalent of the internet? Congrats on finishing the Challenge. I might just have to zip back through to see what other great words I've missed!

  38. Hilary on May 3, 2014 at 3:55 pm

Hi Michelle – Commonplace books are amazing  … but I think I prefer the Zibaldone word .. and I like Lori MacLaughlin's comment .. Zi bald one … not!

Cheers – have fun choosing … and congratulations on a great idea for the A-Z … Hilary
