The Insecure Writer’s Support Group ~ No#63

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer – aim for a dozen new people each time.

A big thank you to our co-hosts for this month’s posting: Tamara Narayan, Patsy Collins, M.J. Fifield, and Nicohle Christopherson!
Don’t forget to visit them and thank them for co-hosting!

Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSG.

We have a lot of cool things in the works for our members, including another anthology opportunity and an upcoming IWSG TWITTER PITCH PARTY!

                                          Hashtag #IWSGPit
DATE:  July 27, 2017, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Eastern Time

All writers and authors are invited to participate in our very first Twitter Pitch. Create a Twitter-length pitch for your completed and polished manuscript and leave room for genre, age, and the hashtag. On July 27, Tweet your pitch. If your pitch receives a favorite/heart from a publisher/agent check their submission guidelines and send your requested query. Many writers have seen their books published from a Twitter pitch – it’s a quick and easy way to put your manuscript in front of publishers and agents. We invite all of you to join us that day! Authors with a publisher or agent, please ask if they would like to participate or pass along their contact information to the IWSG. We intend for this to be a twice yearly event, July and January, giving our members a great opportunity for publication. Help us spread the word!

See the IWSG Twitter Pitch page for details and a sample email to send to your publisher or agent.

                                                 New Swag!

Check out the IWSG Swag page for some cool new stuff, including mugs and erasers. The tiny profit we make from sales of IWSG swag goes to fund opportunities to make the IWSG better for everyone and extend our reach. We recently created our own business cards and have other exciting options in the works.

MARCH 03rd QUESTION: Have you ever pulled out a really old story and reworked it? Did it work out? So funny that this is the question of the month. My answer is yes and no which equals…sort of.
Let me explain. I’m trying my hand at writing a radio play. So I found an old dialogue snippet which is approximately 800 words and I’m using it as a starting point. The required length is about 8 000 words. How did this come about? A local author/playwright who has sold numerous radio plays to one of our established local radio stations is assisting those who wish to give it a go. She’s even provided us with a template. If the radio station is interested, the payment is really good.
We’ll see how it goes.

So what’s the latest with you? How’s your writing going? Happy IWSG Day everybody!

How exciting! And you have help. Good luck.

I don’t need another mug but I had to order one.

I always like reading the pitches in pitch contests. Some people are so good at it! I can summarize things pretty easily, but I’m not good at making it interesting. Ooh, I love the inside of the mugs! The contrast is nice.

That radio opportunity sounds exciting! Best of luck on it! My mom would play us radio stories all the time growing up. I loved them.

Hi Michelle – the IWSG does do an awful lot for everyone in the group (a me – not being a member!). Your opportunity sounds wonderful and how lucky to come across someone who is prepared to help – good luck and please report back … cheers Hilary

Oh wow! I’ve never heard of someone writing a radio play before! Is that like Welcome to Nightvale? Or the older “War of the Worlds” scare? I hope to hear more about this play of yours. It sounds fascinating!

A Twitter Pitch Party–never heard of that. Sounds pretty cool!

I’m super excited about the twitter pitch party! Now to spend the next few months agonizing over the perfect words.

And how exciting about the radio play! I will be excited to see/read/hear how it works out.

That’s cool that you are doing a radio play. And your post today is a good example of never throwing away your writing. Never know when something you gave up on can help you with a new project.

I’ve had that “aha” moment when it finally hits me why a story wasn’t working. I grab the shovel, dig the MS out of the deep pit in which I buried it, and take another run at it. Sometimes they get shiny. Sometimes it’s back to the pit.
